His brother was J. Benson Underwood.

[edit] Illustrated History of Lane County

Let us mention here that August 14, 1882, David C. Underwood, brother of the gentleman whose death we have just noticed, died in Eugene City, aged about fifty-two years. This gentleman came to Oregon in or about 1860. In 1862 he was appointed a lieutenant in one of the Oregon volunteer companies called out by Governor Gibbs, and served about two years in Southern Oregon under Colonel Maury. About 1869 he engaged in mercantile affairs with Mr. Whipple at Cottage Grove, and later, coming to Eugene City joined his brother in business, but they were both in failing health and success attended them not. They were both men of fine abilities and had a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. In the same month, almost at the same time, and within a stone's throw of each other, they passed away and now sleep in the same cemetery on the hill in sight of the beautiful town where they passed many years, moving in prosperous circles, leaders among men.
