William G. was born in 1865. In addition to its commercial and industrial growth, Springfield progressed culturally as well. In 1892, a weekly newspaper called The Springfield Messenger was published for a year by W. Frank and William G. Gilstrap, who set and printed the local news on a hand press. William also was co-publisher of the Eugene Morning Register and handled real estate, insurance, and loans.
