The current town of Elmira in Oregon's Southern Willamette Valley was originally named Duckworth. Government officials were convinced to change the name to Elmira in December of 1884. A landowner and local businessman, Byron Ellmaker, requested the name-change shortly after settling in Lane County. Elmira is close to the Long Tom River and near the current Fern Ridge Reservoir.

Elmira is located 15 miles away from Eugene, Oregon on highway 126 near the city of Veneta.
