“F.B. Dunn is dead!” exclaimed the [[Eugene Daily Guard]] the afternoon of [[July 20]], [[1892]]. The prominent merchant (1833-[[1892]]) had died suddenly that morning, collapsing on his front porch due to a “rupture of the heart.” He had arrived in Oregon in [[1853]] without a dollar to his name. Within two years he was running his own mercantile business, and at the time of his death owned over 4,000
acres of land. A school director and former mayor, he was active in nearly every element of civic life. Public offices and private businesses in [[Eugene]] closed for his funeral, said the Guard. “The procession was the largest one that ever wended its way to a cemetery from this city.”
