Luther M. Dillard (1846-[[1889]]) came to Oregon as a boy in [[1853]], and grew up to amass substantial acreage southeast of [[Eugene]], where [[Dillard Road]] is today. “He was essentially a member of the class of doers, gifted with initiative and quick resolve,” said the History of Oregon in [[1903]], “and he never under stress of action faltered, hesitated nor reconsidered.” He married Samantha Emmons, a descendent of Daniel Boone, in [[1875]]. Their children included [[Dillard, Walter|Walter Dillard]], who became a Eugene attorney and school superintendent, and John L. Dillard, who became a civil engineer.
