	To George Geherhart Bushman the United States has indeed been "the land of opportunity," for he has here attained a success and prosperity which would have been well nigh impossible for him to have achieved in his native land, Persistent industry, sound judgment and right living have chracterized his career, and today no citizen of his community is more highly respected than he. Mr. Bushman was born in [[1874]] in Russia, while his parents, Geherhart and Justina Bushman, were on their way to this country from Germany. They located in Kansas on their arrival in 1874, and there the father took up a tract of government land. In [[1919]] he came to [[Springfield]] and bought the [[Springfield Mill and Grain Company]]. This plant had been established in [[1854]] by a Mr. Pangrey and was one of the first mills in the Willamette Valley. It was well constructed, and the old hand-hewn timbers are still in the building. The original stone buhrs are also still here, but are no longer used in the grinding of grain. The mill changed hands many times, finally coming under the ownership of Mr. Bushman, who is now operating it in association with his sons, Arthur and John. The mill has a daily capacity of two hundred and twenty-five barrels of flour and one carload of feed, having one hundred and fifty horse-power, water power being utilized. Fifteen or more men are employed, and three large delivery trucks are used, the products of the mill being sold mainly to local merchants. The company manufactures the "Feather Flake," "Polkadot" and "Snowball" brands of flour, the quality of which has given them wide popularity throughout this section of the state. Mr. Bushman also gave considerable attention to the making of flour from soft wheat, which he exported to Japan and China.	+	George G.
