*In 1871, the Oregon and California Railroad bypassed [[Springfield]] in favor of [[Eugene]] after a group of Eugene businessmen paid railroad financier Ben Holladay $48,000 to reroute the line. While Eugene prospered, the city of Springfield stagnated without direct access to this important transportation resource (Graham 1978b:2-3).

The village of Springfield boats three churches, none of the histories of which, although promised, have we received.
