-- We are pleased to announce that the 11th Annual Association of Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Students Conference (APRU DSC) will take place from July 12 to 16, 2010 at the Central Library - Crystal of Knowledge, Universitas Indonesia (UI). Doctoral students from all disciplines are invited to attend and present papers related to their doctoral research and based on the conference theme: “Research for the Sustainability of Civilizations: Past, Present and Future.” The theme will be further subdivided into 5 focal areas: Social, Economic and Cultural Policy; Climate Change and Sustainability Development; Spirituality and Identity; Technology; and Health.

• Call for Applications - Institute for International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights:

-- The Asian International Justice Initiative wishes to announce that applications are now open for its third annual Summer Institute for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Human Rights (Summer Institute 2010). Summer Institute 2010 will be held in collaboration with the Indonesian National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) in Bali and will be followed by an optional field trip to Aceh, Sumatra.

-- This two-week workshop is designed for participants working across a broad range of fields and disciplines related to IHL and human rights. The workshop is best suited to people working within the Asia Pacific region or with an Asia Pacific focus. Participants from Southeast Asia are strongly encouraged to apply. Lawyers, academics, journalists, non-governmental organization workers, investigators, monitors, government agency workers, as well advanced (graduate level) law students from across Asia and internationally will find the workshop relevant to their work.

-- This year's course will focus on an area of study and practice that engages key IHL and human rights issues facing advocates, policy-makers and academics today: the rise of internal (or non-international) conflicts in the latter part of the twentieth century and the first decade of the new millennium, and their impact on both regional and international peace and security. The curriculum will focus both on how conflicts have emerged in the Asia Asia Pacific region as well as conflict resolution, with a specific emphasis on conflicts, past and present, in Southeast Asia and Sri Lanka. The primary country case studies considered during this course will be: Indonesia (particularly focusing on the conflicts in Aceh and Papua); the Philippines (particularly focusing on the conflict between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Mindanao); Sri Lanka; and southern Thailand.

Candidates who show the greatest need and who have the greatest potential to both benefit from, and contribute to, the course are particularly encouraged to apply for scholarships. • Asia Pacific Performance Exchange Residency - A project of the UCLA Center for Intercultural Performance:

-- APPEX 2010 is a three-week intensive residency in Bali, Indonesia. For five days a week, artists will engage in master classes, studio workshops, experimentation, collaborative projects and public performances. On weekends participants will be introduced to the vibrant arts and culture context of Bali through specially planned field trips and concerts. A total of 16 artists will participate in the APPEX 2010 program. An equal number of American and Asian participants will take part in the program. Asian participants will be recruited from India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Cambodia.

-- WHO SHOULD APPLY. Traditional and contemporary performing artists from USA are invited to apply. Special care will be given in the selection process to ensure a balance across disciplines. • Pancasila's Contemporary Appeal: Re-legitimizing Indonesia's Founding Ethos, 2nd International Yale Indonesia Forum Interdisciplinary Conference, July 1-2, 2009, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia

-- The aim of this conference is to address questions and issues exploring to what degree Pancasila, as the founding ethos of Indonesia, continues to be relevant in a global and modern Indonesian society? To what degree can Pancasila and its followers address the various challenges of the centrifugal forces of globalization and modernity? True to the multidisciplinary goal of the Yale Indonesia Forum (YIF), this topic will be approached by scientists and researchers from various intellectual and academic disciplines in order to highlight and question the different aspects of Indonesia's founding ethos of Pancasila. Abstracts are therefore invited for papers from scholars focusing on any social, economic, cultural, or religious aspect of this issue. Yogyakarta has again been chosen to host this year's YIF conference because of its nature as center of academic excellence in Indonesia, and as such, capacity to bring together intellectually and ethnically diverse people from all parts of Indonesia. • Language, Culture, and Globalization in Southeast Asian Countries", Airlangga University, Surabaya, December 11th 2008

-- This symposium seeks to bring analyses in the field of humanities to bear on the complex relationship between language, culture and history, and the process of globalization in Southeast Asian countries. It also seeks to explore questions concerning commonalities and differences among Southeast Asians, who often come from radically different social, cultural and political contexts and yet who live in a world that is increasingly globally connected. The symposium has identified several sub-themes to explore under this main theme. There are, among others, linguistics, literary works, translation studies, and cultures of Southeast Asia as regional identity markers in the domain of globalization, linguistic genocide, ethnography, and media in the era of globalization, indigenous studies and regional history: challenges and responses. In particular, participants are encouraged to engage with multidimensional and multidiscipline perspectives to share the researches in linguistics, literature, history, and culture in the domain of hegemonic globalization in Southeast Asian countries. This symposium will use Indonesian, Malay, and English languages. The symposium invites experts, journalists, researches, lecturers, graduate students and others to present papers in the symposium. The deadline for abstracts is October 31, 2008. Abstracts should include (1) author's name, mail and email address; (2) an indication (if appropriate) of the "site of inquiry" for which the contribution is intended; (3) the length is around 300 � 500 words. -- Theme of the Conference: "(Re)Considering Contemporary Indonesia: Striving for Democracy, Sustainability, and Prosperity, A Multidisciplinary Perspective"

-- We invite all Graduate Students from various disciplines working on Indonesia to submit abstracts and papers on the basis of current research on the contemporary issues of Indonesia. The themes of submitted abstracts/papers can cover various aspects of people's life in relation to the main theme of the conference, such as: history, philosophy, law/legal aspect, social, culture, language, literature, religion/beliefs, environment, politics, democracy/human right, education, economics, management, agriculture, health, international relations, media studies, arts, gender issues, and others.

-- Panels will be organized later according to particular themes/issues of students' abstracts/papers. We also welcome any proposal to organize a panel on a particular theme with its panels' coordinators (scholars), a number of students' abstracts under the same theme, and discussants for each session in the panel (if any). • The Indonesian Regional Science Association (IRSA) is preparing its Ninth International Conference in Palembang, South Sumatera, on July 30-31, 2008, titled "The Current and Future Issues of Regional Development, Energy and Climate Change".

• Indonesia's Decade of Democratisation: The rise of constitutional democracy

The conference is conceived of as being a serious academic undertaking, and therefore will involve critical reflection and some critique. Nevertheless, it is also intended that the conference capture the interest of a broader audience beyond academia and that it focus attention on the many positive advances and achievements that constitute the remarkable story of Indonesia's democratic transition.

This conference is partly inspired by and modelled upon the very successful conference Indonesian Democracy, 1950s and 1990s held by the Centre of Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Monash University in December 1992 in honour of Herb Feith who had retired from the politics department at Monash University

Indonesian democracy conference, like the one in 1992, is also inspired by Herb Feith's seminal work The Decline of Constitutional Democracy, published in 1962 and republished in 2007 by Equinox Publishing in Jakarta. Just as the 1992 Indonesian democracy conference resulted in a significant academic book (edited by David Bourchier and John Legge) it is intended that this 2008 Indonesian democracy conference will also result in a landmark publication.
