  • Junior Associates in Asian Affairs: Professional Development Opportunity

-- Spring 2007 Program: The Asia Foundation invites graduates students and recent graduate degree holders to apply for a limited number of opportunities as Junior Associates in Asian Affairs in the Foundation's offices in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. These short-term affiliations are to further the professional development of individuals specifically interested in Asia. Successful applicants will gain further knowledge of the region and an understanding of the Foundation's work through specific assignments such as the following: conducting research; contributing to proposal development; assisting with the design and implementation of programs; preparing reports on Foundation projects; and other tasks as needed. Associates may be invited for full or part-time positions for three months (February - April) during the spring with a monthly stipend.

-- Eligibility: Graduate student status or recent graduate degree; Graduate studies in Asia-related areas; international relations; international development; public administration; public policy; and law, political science, economics, or sociology with work experience in Asia; Strong written and verbal communication skills; Good organizational skills; Good computer skills

  • Princeton-in-Asia (PiA)

-- PiA offers paid, one- or two-year internship placements in 15 Asian countries. PiA is affiliated with Princeton University. The program has fees, though they are very low. Applicants must be willing to go for an interview in Princeton, New Jersey.

-- The application deadline for Princeton-in-Asia is MONDAY, DEC. 4, 2006 (for working abroad in academic year 2007-8). Citizens of all countries are eligible. For more information and to apply, see http://www.princeton.edu/~pia/

-- PiA expects to offer approximately 90 one- or two-year paid internships in 15 Asian countries: China, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

-- Most PiA positions involve teaching English in universities and high schools, but PiA also offers the following kinds of non-teaching positions, according to a recent message from PiA's Director.

1) NGOs -- in China, East Timor, Laos, Mongolia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. They are with international NGOs doing work in the field of public health, HIV/AIDs, conservation, and micro-credit.

2) Media Positions: Hong Kong, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam

3) Business Positions: positions with finance companies in Thailand, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Vietnam, and China. Law firm position in Hong Kong and Shanghai.
