An exceptionally dangerous proposition, destroying the fourth wall would theoretically have one of two outcomes. Either the window between universes would be permanently lost, making any observatory contact impossible, or the window would become a doorway, allowing any beings from either universe to cross into the other. Thankfully the methods of performing fatal damage to the fourth wall are unknown...at least, in this world. | An exceptionally dangerous proposition, destroying the fourth wall would theoretically have one of two outcomes. A one-way transparent barrier between universes, made out of belief from both. The belief from denizens of the viewed universes is that that world is the real world. Belief from the viewing universe is that the viewed universe is fiction. These contradictory convictions form the near-impenetrable barrier between the two, known colloaquially as the "fourth wall."
Breaking the Fourth Wall
The barrier can be breached, but only by certain individuals. In the viewing universe, typically only the "creator" of the viewed universe (actually one whose subconcious mind is in tune with that his or her equivalent in that world,) can breach the wall and appear in the viewed universe, typically stopping time, appearing in a different location, or otherwise going unnoticed by the inhabitants thereof.
This same person can imbue almost any inhabitant of the viewed universe with temporary or permanent awareness that they are being observed by other beings. Alternately, these beings themselves may accidentally refer to or create situations and/or beings in the viewing universe, often as fictional entities.
Either method is performed by reversing which belief is held by that person ("This world is real" vs. "That world is false"), thus altering which side of the fourth wall that person sustains, and granting them certain knowledge and capabilities in the other world. Those who breach the barrier from the viewing universe invariably have more power than those who attempt the same from the viewed.
Destroying the Fourth Wall
An exceptionally dangerous proposition, destroying the fourth wall would theoretically have one of two outcomes. Either the window between universes would be permanently lost, making any observatory contact impossible, or the window would become a doorway, allowing any beings from either universe to cross into the other. Thankfully the methods of performing fatal damage to the fourth wall are unknown...at least, in this world.
LPW:
Several attempts have been made to assault the Fourth Wall from both sides in the LPW thread. None of these have succeeded in destroying the Wall, but several have created "chinks" (a la Pyramus and Thisbe) which allowed knowledge to leak across the barrier between the IC and OOCZones.
