It's been a long night so far, and you glance at the clock. 5:30 AM. "Greaaaaat." you mutter to yourself. "Guess who's gonna be sleeping till noon?" You message one of your friends, Cassidy. You, her, and Marissa have been planning a road trip to Florida to celebrate the end of your High School career, and are set to leave tomorrow. She sends back a "Not you, you need to be over here at 8. You know it." You laugh, and tell her that you might as well go to sleep now, and she agrees. Closing the laptop on your desk, you walk over to your bed, and then realize that your glass of water is empty. Knowing that you'll need it through the night, you take it and open the door to go fill it up downstairs.

The rest of the house is almost pitch black, and you stop to let your eyes adjust. After a couple of seconds, you figure you're good, and set downstairs. Luckily, you see the cat on the top step, and nudge him with your foot. He looks up, seems to meow a disapproval, and walks up and into your room. Continuing down, you notice a faint light emanating in the kitchen. Getting closer, you realize it's the fridge door, wide open. You feel a slight sense of dread, but figure someone mustn't of closed it all the way before, and it swung back open over time. Closing it, you think about the trip tomorrow, and how much fun you'll be having. Turning around to leave, you see that the back door is wide open. The glass slips out of your hand, and shatters on the floor. You're too busy being frozen by fear to notice, however.

Then, you hear a noise from the living room. A noise you really didn't want to hear. Breathing. You try to run for the stairs, but someone grabs you by the hair and tugs your head backwards. Their face is obscured by a halloween mask, and he is wielding a bread knife. He plunges the knife into your throat, and twists it. You attempt to scream, but all that comes out is a bloody gurgle, and he continues to tear and rip your neck with the bread knife. You go limp, and he withdraws the knife, and crouches over you. With your vision glazing over, you can barely make out the words he's saying. "Wake up... Jenna. Jenna. Wake up..."

You open your eyes, sit up and scream. You stop when you realize you're in bed, with Cassidy standing over you. "Hey. Finally you're up. Bad dream?" You nod, and grab your glass, downing the whole thing. You look at your alarm clock, and see that it's about 7:30. The sun has risen and is illuminating your room. Cassidy motions back to your window, which is open. "I'm gonna leave, you hurry over, okay?" You tell her you'll be right over, and she climbs back out the window. You feel slightly violated that someone could simply come up the side of your house, open the window and get inside. Then, you realize that there's no way she could have gotten up to your window. Looking back out, you see her carrying a ladder away. "Unless," you mumble under your breath, "She has a ladder. Is there nothing she's unprepared for?" You take a quick shower and get dressed. Nothing fancy, you promise yourself, throwing some clothes into a suitcase. You're gonna be gone a week, only a couple of outfits. You finish packing minutes later, and look at the clock. 7:53. You take one last look at yourself in the mirror. The jeans and loose t-shirt is a combo your friends expect from you, and you feel comfortable in it. You tell your parents you're going, and set out.

You feel ready to take on the long road ahead of you. Finally you arrive, and Cassidy opens the door. "Five minutes late, Jenna. Lucky we don't leave without you. No, I'm kidding. Let's go. Bye Mom, bye Dad, Marissa, get out here!" You hear a toilet flush in the distance, and see Marissa hurrying out. She's smoothing the black frilly dress and adjusting her hair. Most people would call her style Goth, but she feels no connection to the term or social group. She just likes certain bands and clothing. Cassidy holds up the keys to the car she got for her 17th birthday, a Prius. You've joked about it before with her, calling her an eco-hippy, but you kinda like the car. "Jenna, Marissa, either of you wanna drive?" Marissa shakes her head and sighs. "Oh no, no driving for me. I can't drive worth a shit and you know it. Last time I was behind the wheel I hit that kid on his bike." Cassidy laughs. "Yeah, and sped off?" Marissa looks less than amused. "Sure, he was okay, but I still feel terrible." Cassidy turns to you. "Alright then, Jenna. Who's gonna drive? Me or you?"

You tell her...
