You try to sound a balanced mix of "lady in need" and "down to earth". Appealing to his protective instincts and trying to convince him you'll work your part without complaints.
He listens intently untill you are done and smiles. "Allright, I wouldn't hire someone who's just plain desperate, but you seem to have a pretty decent head on your shoulders." You smile at the compliment. "I try to be realistic."
