While Carla is sleeping in your guest room, you and Heather decide to call the police. You cannot handle another late night visit because of Todd. You dial and detail what you know happened, and they tell you they will be there soon. Another knock on the door and the cops are here. You wake Carla and she sees the officer. She looks at you with betrayal in her eyes, but you know this is the right thing to do. There is no way that she can go back to him again. She talks to the officers and denies everything. She tells them that she got mugged while walking and the bruises were from an ice skating fall. They have probably heard it all before, but can't force her to talk. You call her into the other room and ask why she is doing this. She defends Todd again and says it won't happen again that she just made him mad. You look down on her with pity and contempt, yet there is literally nothing you can do to help her. She goes back to the police and tells them its all a misunderstanding. You give up and just agree. The cops leave and Carla follows soon after. Heather looks to you for an explanation and you just tell her that this is Carla's mistake and she will have to deal with the consequences.
You see her at work the following day and she is explaining to your coworkers about the horrifying mugging that she endured. She sees you and you give her a knowing look that she immediately has to look away from. It is so hard to see someone you care about be abused.
Three weeks later, there is another knock at the door. You look at Heather and roll your eyes, it can only be one person. You open the door and its a police officer. He asks to come in and you oblige. He sits at your dining table and says you should sit down as well. You glance at Heather quickly before taking a seat. He tells you that Carla was killed tonight; she suffered from blunt trauma and her organs failed. You say one thing, Todd. The officer nods and says he can't be found. He asks for any leads, but you have no idea. He takes down your information before leaving you in a state of shock with Heather still on the couch. She comes over and hugs you. You don't cry. She was such an idiot, it truly is her fault to go back to that psycho abuser. You tried to help, but she wouldn't accept it. If you had dated her, maybe this wouldn't have happened. The thought lingers.
The boss is not at work and the whole office knows why. You don't know if he will ever be back. The VP takes over and you get a surprising promotion up to VP spot. You and Heather get married and have twin girls. You name one Tina Elizabeth and the other is Lily Carla. Hopefully, Lily doesn't turn out to be an idiot. She just has to meet the right guy, and she does. The two of them start their own families and you approve of both their choices. Heather passes away at 89 and you go a year later.
