"I'm going in," you say. "Please be careful," Ashley replies. Entering the doorway, you start to look around. The room is now overgrown with plants and fungus. This is surprising as it was not overgrown the night before. Just then, Martin and John attack you. "You shall now face the ultimate price mortal!" John yells. They cover your mouth and tie you up to the bed. Just then, a dark figure wearing a fedora hat comes over and waves his hand over you. Your mind then bends and you are now obligated to obey your master. "Go and bring the others to me," the figure says. "Yes dark master," you reply. "Those foolish mortals shall pay."

The voodoo master now controls you!

Right as you are about to enter the motel, John comes out. All three of you are horrified in expression. "So you have chosen to return mortals," a zombified John says. "I shall have pleasure killing you for the dark master." John then proceeds to attack you with the butcher's knife. Not taking any crap, you block it with your sledgehammer. "You really think your primitive device can defend you stupid mortals?" Martin says as he comes out preparing to attack Jeff. Putting up a large fight, you manage to knock John and Martin back into the room. Thinking fast, Jeff slams the door. "What do we do now?" Ashley asks. With a depressed look on your face, you know very well what the only option is. "Let's burn the damned thing," you say. "Now hold on, that'll kill both of them!" Jeff protests. "What other option do we have?" you respond. "John already tried to cure Martin and now he's one of them too!" Right as Jeff is about to give another protest, he relents. "Y'all are probably right. Let's burn this infernal rat trap." Placing wood near the door, you light it on fire with Jeff's lighter. The building starts burning. The fire then consumes nearly the entire area where the room is. Just then, John holding Martin jumps out the window. He runs over to you. Right as you're about to pull out your magnum and shoot him, he yells "STOP!!!" It's then that you notice John is no longer a zombie. His skin is very lively and his eyes have their iris and pupils back. "John!" you yell. "How the hell did you come back?" After breathing heavily for a few seconds John prepares to answer. "The last thing I remember is some dark figure with a hat on assisting Martin in restraining me to the bed, then hypnotizing me! After that, all I can remember is inhaling large amounts of smoke." "I'm sorry John, I should have checked on you before getting the van," you tell him. "No man," he protests. "You did the right thing. Those zombies could have come back and brainwashed us all." Jeff walks over to the both of you. "It's great to have you back partner," he says. Ashley crying tears of joy runs over and gives John a hug. "Alright everyone," John says. "Let's get into the van and head north." All five of you step into the van... well... four of you walk in while Martin is being hauled in due him being unconscious. John starts the ignition and drives the van north along the abandoned US 297. As soon as you reach Rainier Gap, your group goes back into the abandoned food mart and raids every single last salvageable food and drink item. Shortly afterwards, Jeff siphons more gasoline from the abandoned gas station and directs it into the van's gas tank. It is then that your group continues on their way north. While travelling towards Cascade Ridge, you see no sign of Arnold anywhere along the Ghost Strip. After about two hours, the van finally pulls into Cascade Ridge. You can see a two story home in the distance which appears to be in good shape. Feeling tired, you wonder what your next course of action will be.

It's dark, and jeff lit a board of wood on fire for usage as a makeshift torch. Soon enough, the van comes into view. "Just like we left it," you say. Since the van was never locked and the key remains in the ignition, it will only take a few seconds to get back. "I'm driving," you say. "And I'll join up front with you," Ashley responds. Starting the engine, you place the van in drive and start heading north. After little less than an hour, you reach the motel in Virginia heights. Pulling the van into one of the parking spaces, you get out and start heading towards the motel. You then notice the door is wide open to the room where John and Martin entered. "Oh God, I can't look!" Ashley says.

"Look, I know Martin pisses you off sometimes, but we can't kill him or let him stay like this," John says to you. "Fair enough," you reply. "Wasn't planning on killing him anyway." You then raise your sledghammer in an attack ready position. "Get the intruders!" the head zombie yells. "CHARGE!" Jeff shouts. Using the sledgehammer, you continuously smash the zombies coming at you. Jeff has no problem hitting the other zombies with his rusted pipe, causing teeth to fly every now and then. "Batter up!" Ashley yells as she swings the baseball bat at the approaching zombies. John, using his butcher's knife, hits the zombies continously in the chest, knocking them all down one by one. Right before he swings at the next zombie, John grabs the voodoo Martin. "What the hell?! Let go of me you foolish mortal!" he screams in protest. "Not gonna happen buddy," John replies. John then starts running towards the motel. "Continue keeping the zombies busy, I'll handle Martin!" he yells. The three of you continue pushing back the hoorde of zombies in front of you. "Retreat!" the head zombie yells. "Mark my words mortals, we will succeed yet!" The zombies then run away heading south along the ghost strip. "I can't believe that actually worked," you say. "Now what?" Jeff asks.

"Look, I know Martin pisses you off sometimes, but we can't kill him or let him stay like this," John says to you. "Fair enough," you reply. "Wasn't planning on killing him anyway." “Because of our interest in visiting the Ghost Strip and some voodoo slave owner, Arnold and Martin are missing and possibly in danger. Both of them are our friends… well… maybe not Martin, but we can’t let either of them die.” Ashley, all worried, looks at you. “What do we do?” she asks you. You look her in the eyes with a serious expression. “I agree with Jeff,” you respond. “We need to find weaponry and lots of it. Furthermore, we’ll need the van. It’s faster and will help us get to this voodoo master so we can club his brains out.” The four of you begin searching the ruins of Rainier Gap. Inside an abandoned wood house, you find a sledgehammer and a .44 magnum hand gun with 34 bullets. With only a limited amount of ammo, you decide you will only use it for last resort measures or for use against the voodoo master. Meanwhile, Ashley is checking a nearby home. “Bingo!” she says to herself. Ashley pulls out an aluminum baseball bat along with a kitchen knife. Lastly, John goes back to the food mart and finds a butcher’s knife, which is slightly rusted and bloody. “Kind of gross, but it’ll do,” he says. After picking up more food, wood and the materials of the makeshift tent from last night, the four of you head south towards Virginia Heights and the van. After hours of walking, you reach the motel in Virginia Heights. It is then you realize that sundown has arrived. As expected the zombie appears in front of you again. “You did not heed my warning mortals,” it says. “Now I will do what the dark master commands.” The zombie whistles and more zombies appear. Ready, you pull out your sledgehammer, while the others take out their weapons of choice. Just as you’re about to charge, you see Martin in the crowd. “Martin’s one of them!” you yell. What will you do?

"Oh Shit!" You yell. "It's a damn zombie!" As the figure comes closer you can see its skin is very pale and has no iris or pupil in its eyes whatsoever. Jeff takes out his pipe and prepares to kill it if necessary. "I'm scared! Please hold me," Ashley says to you. You respond by giving her a protective hug. Right when the zombie arrives, it stops right in front of your group. "You have trespassed!" It demands. Are you seriously imagining things, or did this zombie just talk to you. "The Dark Master demands you die for your intrusion!" All of you are speechless. After a few seconds, John finally responds. "Listen, I don't know if you understand me or not, but we don't mean any harm. In fact, we are trying to leave but can't find a way out." The zombie faces John. "Be warned mortal, you have until sundown to leave!" The zombie then walks past your group. "Now that I think about it, it makes sense," you say. "He's dead as we all would expect, but he's probably a voodoo zombie." "What in tarnation is that?" Jeff asks. "In Haiti, it is believed that certain people known as voodoo masters can raise dead corpses and make them their slaves for all eternity through black magic," you say. "In the 1930's, Felicia Felix-Mentor, a Haitian woman who died of the flu in 1907, was found walking around her home town in Haiti in a voodoo trance." "That's kind of sad, yet creepy," Ashley comments. "Alright, go on," John says. "Mentor was asked where she had been. She replied that she was resurrected by a voodoo master and made his slave," you say. "Somehow, Mentor was able to escape her master's grasp and come home." Jeff stands there for a minute. "So y'all are sayin' that this here zombie is under some voodoo spell or somethin'?" he asks. "That's exactly what I'm suggesting, and there's probably more zombie slaves from where that came from," you reply. "Now that we have this situation cleared, I suggest we come up with a plan.

"Alright, but canned and bottled goods only!" John says. "Heaven knows what's lying in there." Jeff takes a metal pipe lying on the ground and smashes the glass door of the store with it. "I'll probably be needin' this later," he says. Walking into the old food mart, it has only a small hint of rotting food smell. Everything else has rotted long ago. Although badly corroded, you notice that everything is stacked neatly. For whatever reason the Ghost Strip was abandoned, the near orderly condition of everything you have seen so far only deepens the mystery. It is as if everyone vanished into thin air. Approaching the canned goods aisle, you see that most of the cans have rusted and their contents molded away years earlier. There are however some cans that look salvageable. Grabbing a slightly rusted can of tomato soup and another less rusted can of vegetables, you have your meal for the day. As soon as everyone else has what they need, the four of you head out of the store and continue north. As soon as the nearest gas station comes into view, the four of you stop and decide to camp out the night in the old parking lot. Gathering sticks and some tarp found in the store, a makeshift tent is created by John. "Nice, but a little crappy looking," he comments. Jeff uses the pipe he found earlier to smash wood off of the gas station's walls. He then takes a jagged piece of metal and cuts the gasoline hose at the nearest pump. He manages to siphon the gasoline out of the pump and onto the pile of wood. Taking out his trusty lighter, he ignites the makeshift campfire. "That oughta do it," Jeff says. Removing your jacket, and then your shirt, you ball up your shirt to use as a makeshift pillow for later. So as not to freeze, you put your jacket back on. As soon as the fire is big enough, you open the can of tomato soup with a rock and Roast it on the fire. Bending the can's lid in a certain way, you create a makeshift spoon. Ashley then comes over to you. "what do you have there?" She asks. "Tomato soup," you reply. "Want some?" "Sure," she says. After finishing the tomato soup and vegetables with her, along with some of the food she salvaged, both of you lie down together. "The stars sure are pretty tonight," Ashley comments. "It's too bad you can't see them very well in Seattle." Smiling you face her. "I know what you mean," you reply. "I've always wondered if there are others similar to us living near one of those stars." "Maybe they show love and affection the way people on Earth do," Ashley says. "Yeah," you mutter back. You and Ashley then get closer and start kissing. Before long, both of you are asleep. In the morning, you wake up to a dead fire and both John and Jeff ready to continue on the journey. "Let's get moving," John says. "We have a long road ahead of us." Getting up, you begin walking forward. Up ahead, you see someone walking around. "HEY!" John shouts at the distant figure. The figure then turns around and begins walking towards your group. You expression turns from hopeful to horrified as the figure comes out into the light.

"It's best if we just keep moving," you say. "I hate to say it, but you're probably right," John replies. "Good," Martin says. "We're finally rid of that little prick." Angry at what Martin has just said, you can't take it anymore. "YOU KNOW WHAT?! YOU CAN GO TO HELL AND DIE FOR ALL I CARE," you scream at him. "HE ISN'T EVEN HERE, COULD POSSIBLY BE IN DANGER AND ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS BADMOUTHING HIM." Martin also angry turns around and starts walking away. "Fine then," he says back. "That's where I'll be." Martin continues walking away slowly and eventually disappears down the highway. "You really shouldn't have said that to him," John says to you. "Serves him right," you reply. "He had it coming. Lets go." As you start walking, Jeff gets your attention. "We should be stickin' together," he says. "Y'all never know what might happen in this here brush." Turning to face him, you say, "He's probably heading back to the van and then down to I-90 on what's left of the gravel road." Ashley walks up closer to you. "I think you did the right thing," she whispers in your ear. "Thanks," you mutter back. Walking further up the highway, there isn't much to see besides the occasional decaying road markers and a small shack every now and then. After a few hours of walking, the four of you approach the outskirts of Rainier Gap. "Whew," Jeff exclaims. "Smells like a darn polecat." Sure enough, there is a half eaten dead skunk lying on the road. "Seems nature doesn't have much of a problem here," you say. Walking into town, there is a small food store. Not having anything to eat since breakfast two days ago, everyone is starving.

"We should probably look for the poor feller," Jeff states. "Alright, I'll go look around the rest of the motel for him," you say. "Good idea," John says. "Meet us back here when you're done looking or if you find him." Martin looks as if he is about to say something, when John gives him an ugly look. Martin, worried about getting hit yet again, refrains from doing so. "I'm going with you," Ashley says. "Good luck," Jeff says. You and Ashley then start walking towards the nearest room. "It's locked!" You exclaim. "Let's try a different door then," Ashley suggests. After trying several doors, one of the rooms opens. Both you and Ashley walk inside. There are plants growing all over the room and there is no sign of anyone. Walking into the bathroom, you continue looking. "ARNOLD!" You shout hoping you get a reply. Just as Ashley walks in, she screams. Before you can say anything, a large shadow-like object comes out of the toilet in the form of a human hand. "Shit" is all you manage to yell before it grabs you and drags you down the toilet. Ten seconds later, blood bubbles up from the piping causing Ashley to run away crying. She manages to run into John. "JOHN, [your name here] IS DEAD!!!" she screams before John hugs her. "Hopefully, he's in a better place now," he says to a crying Ashley. All the meanwhile, you're stuck watching Ashley mourn over your death as you ascend the stairway to heaven.

"So you and your failure squad decided to come crawling back?!" Martin says rudely. Angry, you punch him in the face and give him a bloody nose. "Shut the hell up," you say back. "It may be disgusting, but hell, we can tough the night out here."

"No way am I sleeping in that place, it's disgusting!" You say. "Fine then. Go away and take bed wetter with you," Martin scoffs. Angry, you ball up your fist and get closer to him. "You know what?! I think I will!" You scream at him. "The hell with you!" Arnold, all excited, runs over towards you. "Thanks man, I really didn't want to sleep in there." John looks over at both of you in a worried fashion. "Come on John, leave em be," Jeff says. "If they want to up and kill themselves, let 'em." As Martin, Jeff, John and Ashley start walking towards the motel. Feeling compelled, Ashley looks back only for a second before she starts running towards you. "I can't leave you. Please take me too!" She says nearly crying. A feeling of guilt goes over your body. What will you do?

"Look, it may be disgusting, but it's our best option," John says. "Yep," Jeff replies. "It don't matter if them critters occupy that there place, we needs our shut-eye." Approaching the motel, you see that one of the rooms has survived largely intact with little outside infestation. "Let's take this one," you suggest. "Yeah, it looks better than the rest, that's for sure," Martin says. Jeff, not wanting to disturb anyone, decides to sleep in the closet alone. Martin and John decide to share the single bed. "Hey guys, can I sleep with you?" Arnold asks shaking. "Shut up bed wetter!" Martin scolds. Just then, John hits Martin on the head. "Alright Arnold, but don't disturb us during the night," he says. "Thanks," Arnold says smiling as he crawls into bed with the other two. Without many other options, you decide to take the bathtub. Ashley then walks into the room. "I would feel safer if I had someone to sleep with," she says. Feeling obligated you decide to let her join you. "Hop in," you tell her. Smiling she crawls into the tub and lies next to you. "Sure is quiet out here," Ashley mentions to you. "Yep," you mutter back comfortingly. After sitting together for a while, both of you fall asleep. "Where the hell is he?!" The loud yell wakes both you and Ashley up the next morning. Stepping out of the bathroom, John confronts both of you. "Have you two seen Arnold?" he asks. "He hasn't showed up all morning." Martin then turns around. "I doubt those two lovebirds even saw anything, they were too busy doing it," Martin says rudely. Angry, you give Martin the middle finger while saying "Screw you" to him. "Now what's all this fuss about?" Jeff asks as he enters the room. "Arnold's gone," you tell him. "Well, that means there is only one thing to do now," John replies.

"It's just best if we keep driving," John says. "But the road looks to rough," Ashley protests. "God knows how long its been since anyone drove on it last." Ignoring Ashley, John presses the gas pedal and the van continues forward. Passing through Virginia Heights and Rainier Gap, the road is a lot smoother than it appeared to be, despite the harsh weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest. "I guess looks can be deceiving," you say. "If we keep this pace up, we'll reach I-90 in no time!" The abandoned buildings and houses pass by seemingly waving at you. The van passes through Cascade Ridge without much of a problem, by which time, Jeff and Martin are asleep while Arnold is too afraid to say anything. Right before reaching Flats however, you feel the highway move from underneath of you. "WHAT THE HELL?!" John screams. You and Ashley join in by screaming along with a startled Arnold, Martin and Jeff. Just then the van lands on its roof and continues tumbling down the mountainside. As soon as the van comes to a stop, you are crushed beneath the debris of the van's interior. There is no response from John, Arnold, Jeff or Martin and Ashley is in front of you dead and bleeding from her mouth. You then realize that the highway gave out from underneath the van in an avalanche and most likely killed everyone except you. Right as that thought subsides, your vision gets hazy and your life fades away to an approaching light.

"I think it's best if we just get out and look for help." You finally say. "Not a bad idea. Finally one of us has some sense." Martin says. John pulls the van over and turns off the engine. You and your friends then leave the van. "Thank you." Ashley says smiling while you escort her out of the van. "Alright everyone, let's stick together just in case anything happens." John says. After walking for only ten minutes, Arnold starts freaking out. "I can't take it anymore, let me go back to the van!" he yells. "Get a hold of yourself," Jeff yells while smacking Arnold in the face. "Ya ain't been through nothin' yet." While walking, you can't help but notice the condition of the road. Although you have seen abandoned highways before, never have you seen one in a post-apocalyptic manor. More so, the highway signs displaying the white shield with the number "297" still scatter the roadbed. "Reminds me of the ''Walking Dead''," you say to yourself. "Ugh, don't remind me. I hate that show," Martin replies. "I think it looks kind of peaceful," Ashley responds. Ashley then gives you a teasing look. In return you blush, giving out a weak smile. After ten more minutes of walking, you arrive at the first town along the ghost strip. "So this is Virginia Heights?" John says. He then turns around and looks at you. "You had a point back there, saying this looked like the ''Walking Dead''," he says. "Guys, I really think we should pack it in, it's gettin' mighty dark," Jeff suggests. Looking around, you see an old abandoned motel, the only sleeping accommodation in the entire ghost town. On the other hand, the place looks too disgusting to want to sleep in. You can only stand there and think of what to do next.

U.S. Route 297 through Washington State’s Cascade Mountains is a lonely highway. The highway and all the towns along it were abandoned around 1986. By 1991, Virginia Heights, Rainier Gap, Cascade Ridge, Flats, Stramburg and Crystal Falls were all reduced to rotting ghost towns. Not a single soul lives on US 297 or in the towns that align the ghost road. Also, nobody ever goes to visit the ruins of these towns, despite the fact that the towns are mostly intact and each housed about 500 people before the abandonment.
Oddly, nobody knows why US 297 or its towns were abandoned. Stranger still, there are no records that prove the existence highway or the towns. This also means that most of the world’s population doesn’t even know of the “Ghost Strip” as you and your friends call it. A senior in high school, you are one of the few people who know about the Ghost Strip. The six others who share your knowledge along with yourself only know because the records did exist at one point, only to vanish mysteriously.
One Saturday in July, you and your friends decide to go and visit the Ghost Strip. Leaving your home in Seattle, it is only a short trip up I-90 into Snoqualmie Pass, where the abandoned US 297 begins. Pulling off the freeway and following a small gravel road up the mountainside, the beginning of the ominous ghost strip appears in front of you.
“Guys, I really don’t think we should be doing this. I mean, what if we never return?” Ashley, the youngest of your group says. “Aw, don’t be such a wuss. There ain’t nothing to worry about.” Jeff, the oldest replied. “That’s easy for you to say,” Arnold, the wimp of the group states. “You’re the one that always goes hunting with your uncle in Tennessee.” Rolling his eyes, Martin ignores Ashley, Jeff and Arnold and looks out the window. “Guys, just shut up and let’s get moving.” John says, who is behind the van’s wheel.
John then drives the van onto the Ghost Strip, beginning the day’s journey. Just then, an avalanche occurs behind the van and wipes out the gravel road. The only other possible way out, going south on US 297 is impassable due to earlier avalanche damage. The only way out is to travel down the Ghost Strip. You, John, Ashley, Martin Arnold and Jeff can only think of what might happen next.
