You aren't a warrior. At least, not that you can remember. Deciding it best not to take your chances against unknown foes in the dark, you turn and flee in the other direction. Unfortunately, the creatures pursue you, jabbering in what might be a language. Could these creatures be...sentient? You hear one of them give an attack cry and the next thing you know, you feel something heavy and sharp embed itself in your thigh. The pain is excruciating and you cry out, grasping your leg as your attacker pulls out what feels like...a pickax.

The rest of them (you estimate there are only three to five creatures pursuing you) seize the advantage and attack. One of them jumps onto your back, trying to claw at your face. Another pickax embeds itself in your side. There is no doubt you will die if you can't somehow get away from them. You stumble down the tunnel, one hand grasping the gaping wound in your side, the other trying to staunch the bleeding in your thigh. You manage to shake off the little bugger clinging to your back, but you can feel that its dirty claws have left their mark on your face. You hear a clang right behind you as one of your attackers takes a swing at you with their pickax and misses. That's the one thing you have going for you, these creatures aren't particularly fast when hefting heavy pickaxes.

Blood mingles with your sweat and you struggle to get away. Something grapples your knees and you fall. Whatever is attacking you isn't very tall. Dwarves? Imps? You have no idea. You wrench the little bugger from your legs and give it a kick for good measure. It squeals in pain and the others start jabbering angrily at you. Staggering to your feet, you push forward, running your right hand along the wall and using your left to try and staunch the bleeding from the wound in your side. Your leg burns and you can hardly bear to put any weight on it, but if you give in now, you will surely die.

You notice shadows beginning to register in your vision as you flee. Apparently you weren't blind after all, it was just an extraordinarily dark cave. Heartened, you press on toward the light. You're exhausted and faint from pain and blood loss. You feel a refreshing faint breeze on your skin. You must be near the cave entrance. You turn the corner and catch a glimpse of the source of light. A statue rises up before you, nearly as tall as the cave ceiling. It is a naked young woman with two pairs of wings sprouting from her back, one set outstretched as if in flight, the other set wrapped protectively around her body. In her outstretched hands is a small green gem that glows with a faint light. You find yourself reaching toward that light. Despite everything, the sight of it fills you with peace and...hope?

You glance behind you to see your attackers. They are short, no taller than knee height, wearing rusty metal helmets and leather loincloths. You can't make out any more details than that. They are gaining on you as you limp toward the light. Stumbling, you fall to your knees, still crawling toward the light. When you look back to see how close your mysterious attackers are, you catch sight of a tall figure approaching you out of the shadows. Is it a man with...horns? You turn back toward the light and drag yourself closer. If you could just reach that light, you're certain you'll be safe. The light seems to glow brighter for a moment, then there is a flash. Behind you, you hear a sound halfway between a groan and a howl, but you lack the energy to turn and look. The little creatures hiss and you hear their scrabbling footsteps fading away. Your body feels heavy as lead. Your shaky arms give out and you're laying face down on the cave floor before the angel statue. You turn back to see the horned figure still watching you from the shadows, but making no move to approach. Your vision slowly goes dark once more as you pass out on the cave floor.

Stumbling, you fall to your knees and drop your pickax, still crawling toward the light.
It's only about half the length of your forearm and feels as though it might crumble in your hands, but its better than nothing. Though your makeshift weapon makes contact with a few of them, the nocturnal creatures have the advantage. It is odd, though. Since when do bats attack humans so boldly? Bat claws scrape your legs, arms, and back hard enough to draw blood. You swipe wildly at one that has gotten its claws tangled in your hair and end up clubbing yourself with your weapon.
You awaken slowly; head throbbing, body aching. The first thing you see is the rafters of a thatched roof. Odd. You were in a cave last you checked. Your muscles are very stiff, but you manage to turn your head to see more of where you are.

To your left is a small window with the shutters open. You can see the sky is pinkish orange with sparse clouds and a chilly breeze washes over you. You hear long, low bird calls in the distance. Is it sunrise or sunset? You aren't sure. Somewhere a wolf howls.

Looking to your right, you see that you are lying on the floor of a one-room cottage. You feel a mat that someone has attempted to pad with straw beneath you. There is a foul-smelling pot near your feet that might be a chamber pot of some sort. You can't remember ever using one before, but now that you are awake you feel the desperate urge to relieve yourself. There doesn't appear to be anyone in the cottage with you, so you sit up with a groan. Just about every part of you hurts and you can feel bandages beneath your coarse clothing. Proof that your ordeal in the cave was more than just a dream. With great difficulty, you go about the process of relieving yourself as you take in your surroundings.

There is a fireplace nearby with a pot of something boiling over the fire. A simple bed stands on the other side of the fireplace, close enough to be warmed by the fire, but not so close as to catch the straw mattress on fire. A number of dried vegetables, pots, and ladles hang over what you assume to be the kitchen area. It appears that someone was recently chopping some wild onions on a wooden table, the smell almost strong enough to cover the stench of the chamber pot. Near the kitchen are shelves and cupboards filled with small sacks and vials of unknown ingredients as well as teeth, bones, and other animal parts, kept carefully preserved. The strangeness of it all leads you to wonder whether you may have woken up in a witch's hovel. You shiver as another cold breeze strikes your exposed skin.

At that moment, the door to the cottage opens and in walks a young woman with brown hair that just brushes the tips of her ears. The two of you lock eyes and you feel heat rising in your cheeks as you quickly struggle to pull up your trousers. She, on the other hand, seems only momentarily startled, then studiously ignores you as she goes to place a bucket of water on the table in the kitchen area.

"So you're awake," she says, with her back to you. You say nothing as you tie your rope belt, face hot. Your clothes feel strange and unfamiliar and a size or two too large.

"I had to replace your clothes," the young lady says, as if anticipating your thoughts. "They were in such a state when they brought you to me, that I had to borrow some of Trevor's. He was far too eager to comply." That last bit was muttered almost inaudibly as she turned to check the contents of the pot on the fire. Seeming satisfied, she grabs a bowl and starts ladling some soup into it. You ease yourself back onto the mat and watch her, uncertain what, if anything, to say. The thought occurs to you that this young woman has seen you naked and you aren't exactly sure how you feel about that.
Your hands hit a rough-hewn rock wall, halting your progress. The drip still sounds as if it is somewhere to your right so you feel your way along to wall with your left hand, stretching your right hand blindly toward the sound of your salvation. Your tongue is so dry you can hardly swallow and all you can think about is the relief a drink of cool water would bring. Your feet shuffle and scrape on the rock floor of what you presume to be some sort of cave.

'''Smack!'''Your forehead strikes something, startling you. You reach up and feel a rough cone of minerals hanging from the ceiling in front of you. A stalactite, probably. Your hands come away wet with a sheen of mineral water. The dripping is much louder now. Likely a nearby stalactite is dripping water into a shallow pool. Your heart sinks, both because a shallow pool is not as likely to lead to an exit as an underground river would be, and also because you hear strange guttural noises ahead of you and the sound of clawed feet scraping against rock. You appear to have attracted the attention of the unknown denizens of this cave.

You feel around desperately for something, anything with which to defend yourself. Your right hand clasps around a long straight haft of wood. Based on the long, heavy bit of metal attached to the end, you guess this must be a pickax someone abandoned in the cave. You swing it blindly in front of you and make contact with a small squishy body. You are rewarded with an unnervingly humanoid cry of pain. You swing again, and this time your weapon meets resistance. One of the creatures apparently has a pickax of its own and your pickax is parried with a clang of metal on metal. Unable to see anything, you know this is a losing fight for you. You turn and run back the way you came. Unfortunately, the creatures pursue you, jabbering in what might be a language. Could these creatures be...sentient? You hear one of them give an attack cry and the next thing you know, you feel something heavy and sharp embed itself in your thigh. The pain is excruciating and you cry out, grasping your leg as your attacker pulls out their pickax. What kind of cave creatures see in the dark and carry pickaxes? They can't possibly be human and the thought chills you to the bone.

The rest of them (you estimate there are only three to five creatures pursuing you) seize the advantage and attack. One of them jumps onto your back, trying to claw at your face. Another pickax embeds itself in your side. There is no doubt you will die if you can't somehow get away from them. You swing your weapon at them blindly to make them back off, then you stumble down the tunnel, one hand grasping the gaping wound in your side, the other trying to staunch the bleeding in your thigh.

You hook the curved end of your pickax around the pudgy body and wrench the little bugger from your legs, giving it a kick for good measure. It squeals in pain and the others start jabbering angrily at you. Staggering to your feet, you push forward, using your pickax as a short crutch. The pain in your side in almost unbearable and you try to staunch the bleeding with your left hand.

Stumbling, you fall to your knees and drop your pickax, still crawling toward the light.

You bend down and reach for anything you could use as a weapon. Your hand wraps around a stalagmite that has broken off. It's only about half the length of your forearm and feels as though it might crumble in your hands, but its better than nothing. You slash at the bats and push forward toward the sound of wind, hoping it will lead you to the cave entrance. The bats are tenacious and you are attacking blind. Though your makeshift weapon makes contact with a few of them, the nocturnal creatures have the advantage. It is odd, though. Since when do bats attack humans so boldly? And aren't bats supposed to be blind? Then again, if they are relying on sound to locate you, you are making plenty.

Bat claws scrape your legs, arms, and back hard enough to draw blood. You swipe wildly at one that has gotten its claws tangled in your hair and end up clubbing yourself with your weapon. The panicked bat pulls free, taking a clump of your hair with it. You hear another swooping down on you from behind and take a swing at it. Unfortunately, you miss it completely and end up smacking your weapon against the cave wall instead. The stalagmite fragment crumbles into fist-sized chunks and your momentum causes your knuckles to slam into the wall too, eliciting a yelp of pain from you. The relentless bats don't miss a beat and swoop in to take advantage of your momentary defenselessness. You stumble back and your head strikes the wall hard enough to make your vision swim. You sink to your knees and clutch your head with a groan.

You can't give up now. Not when you're so close you can practically feel the cool breeze on your skin. You crawl forward, occasionally swiping feebly at the swarming bats. The sound of their screeching and flapping fills your ears, overwhelming you. A bat flies up in your face and you bat it away, but not before the clawed tip of its wing opens a nasty cut on your cheek. You realize then that the area around you seems a little brighter and you can see the shadows of the cave's natural features and the dark shapes of your attackers. It seems you weren't blind after all, just trapped in an extraordinarily dark cave. Heartened, you push forward toward the light.

You glance behind you and catch sight of a tall figure approaching you out of the shadows. Your body feels heavy as lead. Your shaky arms give out and you're laying face down on the cave floor before the angel statue. You realize that the bats are no longer attacking you, their screeches pained and distant. Your vision slowly goes dark once more as you pass out on the cave floor.
You try to push through the swarm, feeling every scrape of bat claws on your exposed flesh. Their wings beat the sides of your head, the sound filling your ears until you can hardly think. A bat flies up in your face and you jerk backward instinctively, smacking your head against the cave wall. Head spinning, you fall forward onto your hands and knees.

As you drag yourself toward the source of the breeze, you notice that everything around you is getting lighter. You are not, in fact, blind. The darkness around you lightens until you can see the shadows cast by the cave's natural features and see the black forms of the attacking bats. Some of the bats have gotten their claws stuck in the fibers of your clothing and they flap all the more violently in an attempt to free themselves. A bat bites your ear and a wing gets close enough to your face to scrape across your cheek with a clawed tip. You feel light-headed as blood drips from your wounds. Your shaking arms give out, and you're lying on your stomach, trying desperately to pull yourself forward toward the light.

The pain is overwhelming and your vision starts to go dark again. Then, as suddenly as they attacked, the bats leave you. You can hear their screeches fading away back into the cave. You crane your neck, trying to look behind you. You catch a glimpse of a tall, horned figure in the shadows. You slump onto the ground and your vision goes black...
A distant rumble rouses you to consciousness. You are lying on a hard surface, through which you can feel a sort of pulsing vibration beneath your shoulder blades. You blink, trying to clear the darkness from your vision, but you can see nothing.

''I'm blind,'' you think to yourself, and feel the panic start to set in.

With a groan, you roll onto your side, aware that your whole body aches as if you have fallen from a great height. Your head hurts more than anything. You push yourself to your feet, feeling rock beneath your palms as you do. You run your hands over your body and feel the rough fibers of a loose-fitting shirt, pants, and a rope belt, as well as short leather boots. You strain your remaining senses to try and get a sense of where you are. The rumble has grown so faint that you wonder if you may have imagined it altogether. Instead, your ears pick up the sound of dripping water somewhere to your right and what sounds like wind to your left. Far more unnerving is the sound of creatures skittering and scrabbling, faint but growing closer. You cannot stay here for long.

You run your hands over your body and feel the rough fibers of a coarse-woven dress and a rope belt, as well as short leather boots.

Arms stretched out in front of you, you feel your way to your right, toward the sound of dripping. You hope the sound will lead you to a source of water, and maybe to an exit.
