"Father, can I have a moment in privacy with Anastasia?" Lord Kellar looks at him with anxiety, clearly unhappy with leaving his son alone for even an instant, but looking at you he nods and takes his leave, closing the doors behind him.

"Anastasia Van Helsing..." he murmurs. "After all these years and you choose to visit when I am at my least presentable."

You laugh. You forgot how charming he was even in situations such as this. He laughs too but is quickly overcome by coughing fits.

"I am sorry..." he says between gentle sips of water. "I must be worrying you considerably with all of this but I am truly getting better. I am healthier than I look despite the mood in the house."

"May I ask what happened?" You say quietly. "No one else will say."

His face darkens but not at the question. "If you ask my father he will tell you I was struck down by a bear while hunting...but obviously you know they have other...suspicions."

You frown. "Like what?"

He looks at you with mild consternation. "Please Anastasia, you are the smartest woman I know, surely this isn't a mystery to you...my father's life work gave him infinite experience with matters of the unusual and extreme but even he can't face the truth...there was no bear...."

You don't like where this is going.

"It was a wolf."
