Cheryl knocked on David's door and waited for him to call for her. How long ago was it that he'd called her to his office like this? Probably the first time he'd promoted her, he'd done it early too, and she still remembered the looks in everyone's eyes when she left his office again with a big fat smile on her face. What happened? What did she do to get that promotion?
+
Cheryl Ross, Esq. was always on the fast track to success, moving swiftly through her schooling, she graduated Law School at just 19. This impressive feat earned her a shot, right out of the gate with Anderson & Smith, a prestigious corporate law firm.
-
She worked, damn it, and nothing else. Sure, she dressed the part and made it clear to David he was dealing with a woman, but he'd never touched her. He'd look, and she'd feel his eyes on her from time to time, but she did the same to him, so it was fair.
+
Her youthful good looks hid a fierce intellect, and a ruthless nature, she had quickly earned a string of impressive victories, catapulting straight into the upper echelons of the firm.
-
"Come in."
+
So here she was, not even 30, and she had her own office, high in a shining corporate tower. And one day she'd sit at the top, as a full partner. It was inevitable, everyone new it, it was destiny.
-
Cheryl smiled as she opened the door, and her stomach tingled, was he promoting her again?
+
-
-
"Hi, David."
+
However not everyone appreciated her meteoric rise. Chief among them was Rosa Valentine. She held a deep seeded insecurity for her fellow attorney, that only grew as the little prodigy continued to rise. Which all boiled over when Cheryl was giving an important client over her.
-
"Sit down, Cheryl, we need to talk."
+
"They chose that... child! over me!" Rosa seethed to her reflection in the ladies bathroom. Rosa had been climbing the ladder here at A&S for almost as long as that brat had been alive!
-
Cheryl's smile faded, and she sat down, her hands folded in her lap. "What's wrong?"
+
Rosa was in her early 40s, but the tall, dark haired Italian was still as exotic and sexy as ever. She had never slept around at work, but she wasn't afraid to use her domineering sex appeal to disarm opposing council.
-
"I don't know, is there something you need to tell me?"
+
In many ways, Cheryl was her polar opposite. No less attractive, but more cute then sexy. With her short stature, chestnut brown hair, big blue eyes and round button nose. She looked more like a schoolgirl than a lawyer. A fact she had used to great effect, getting her opponents to underestimate her.
-
"I'm not following."
+
Rosa splashed water on her face, and began to cool down. A devious smile soon crept across her face, a sinister plan was forming. it was time to take the princess down.
-
"There's nothing you think I should know?"
+
-
-
"Look, David, stop with the riddles. What are you on about?"
+
She spent the next week preparing, the secretary pool would be her best allies. Cheryl had never been overtly cruel to them, but she had made it pretty clear that she looked down on them, on their lack of drive, of ambition. More concerned with boys--Cheryl had never had time for such things--and gossip than working to get ahead.
-
David held Cheryl's eyes for a few long moments, and the light fluttering in Cheryl's stomach turned sour as her gut clenched with nerves. "Am I being fired? What for?"
+
So when one of these office drones shoved papers for her to sign in her face as she was on hew way to an important meeting, she signed them without question. These things were beneath her, and a waste of her valuable time.
-
"I'm not firing you." He tossed a folder on his desk, and Cheryl startled as it thumped on the wood. "Explain that to me."
+
And just like that, her fate was sealed.
-
Cheryl turned the folder so she could read what was written on it, and she could barely breathe as a fist of dread squeezed her throat shut.
+

'Fraud Cell case #6804521'

'''Day One'''
-
Wordless, she flipped the folder open, and fear dug into her chest as she stared at hard proof of her fraud, down to the tiniest detail. Her hands trembled as she dug her nails into the papers. How did he get this?
+
Cheryl arrived at work, and parked her Lexus, like she had many times before. A cold shiver ran up her spine as she crossed into the lobby, but she brushed it off and took the elevator up to the A&S offices. If only she knew what awaited her.
-
She slumped and squeezed her eyes shut to stop the tears from forming. "Are you sending me to jail?"
+
Before she could even sit down, she was called into Mr. Winston's office. He was a junior partner, and her boss, Cheryl couldn't help but feel like she was being called into the principles office. But that was silly, she was a model employee, she had nothing to fear... right?
-
"We're talking about half a million dollars, Cheryl, more if we hadn't caught you." Cheryl sank deeper into the chair, she'd never counted it all together. "Where is it?"
+
"John"
-
"Gone."
+
"Cheryl, (sigh) have a seat"
-
"All of it?"
+
Cheryl didn't like the sound of his tone. "What's this all about"
-
"I had debts to pay off."
+
"I'll be blunt, we know about the money."
-
David snorted and said, "You did not have half a million in debt."
+
"What money?" Cheryl said, genuinely confused.
-
"Iā€”"
+
"The money you embezzled from the firm." He slid a document across his desk to Cheryl.
-
"I don't want to hear your excuses, Cheryl. Do you know what will happen to this company if we get audited?"
+
As she read, her stomach twisted into knots, and her heart caught in her throat.  "This... this isn't me!"
-
"I... yes."
+
"That's your signature isn't it?"
-
"Half a million in tax evasion is going to cost us millions in fines and legal charges. We don't have millions just lying around, Cheryl, the money's going to have to come from somewhere, which means that if the audit ever comes, I'm going to be forced to lay off a lot of hard working people because of you."
+
"Y... yes. but-"
-
He got up from his chair and strode around his desk until he stood behind Cheryl. "I'm honestly amazed you had the balls to show up for work knowing what you did. I trusted you, Cheryl, I gave you a chance, and this is how you repay me? Whatever your debt was before, it's now half a million and change, and you owe it to me."
+
"Save it. Now, normally we'd have you fired and arrested. But it would put a black mark on the firm to have our rising star betray us like this."
-
Cheryl froze as David put his hands on her shoulders and pressed her down into her chair, his fingers trembled as he took a deep breath and eased the pressure. Another deep breath and he let go of her.
+
"I didn't betray you sir." Cheryl sobs, as tears begin to flow.
-
His presence still loomed behind her though, and his voice was measured when he said, "I can send you to jail, but I'd prefer to make a deal, we don't need bad publicity in today's market."
+
Mr. Winston just ignores her and continues. "But, I've been giving another idea. You can either face the law, or submit yourself to our... personal punishment.
-
Hope sparked in Cheryl's chest, and she straightened. "What kind of deal?"
+
"pun... punishment?"
-
"One where you work in this office under a special contract." David reached around Cheryl for the folder he'd thrown on the desk and pulled a stapled bundle from the bottom of it. He dangled it in front of her face and said, "Read it."
+
He slides her another document. "Yes, sign that contract, and you agree to any and all judgments we deem necessary. Refuse, or renege on the deal later, and we press charges. And with our legal pull, you know we'll get you 10 years."
-
Cheryl did as he told her, and dread settled in her stomach. When she reached the last page, David spoke again. "Despite what you've done, I don't want to see you go to jail, but you can't keep your old job, and just letting this go is not an option either. You need to pay for what you've done, and since I'm the one who gave you a chance, I'm the one who needs to punish you."
+
(sniff) "You can't be serious. I didn't do it!"
-
"By turning me into a whore."
+
"I'm deadly serious Cheryl. You stole over $500'000 from us. The higher-ups want you to pay. Severely."
-
"Yes, you're going to whore out your beautiful body to pay off your debt, and I'm going to expect you to achieve the same standard I've always kept you to. If you miss your monthly quota, you get sent to jail, if you disobey, your ass goes to jail, if you don't sign..."
+
Cheryl's head was spinning. This couldn't be happening, it had to be a bad dream!
-
"I go to jail."
+
"Your decision, Ms. Ross?"
-
"If any of this gets out into the public..."
+
Cheryl didn't want to admit to something she didn't do, but she definitely didn't want to go to jail. She takes a deep breath, calms her nerves, and resolves herself.
-
"I go to jail."
+
"Alright..."
-

+
-
"But if you pay off your debt, you'll leave this company with a glowing letter of recommendation, and you and I will never work together again."
+
-

+
-
"That part's true?"
+
-

+
-
"Of course it is, it's in the contract. You've made a mistake, and I expect you to pay for it, but I'm not going to hold it over your head after you leave here, and I will give you a fair judging, no matter what our history." He held out a pen to her. "Will you need to read it again? Or do I call the authorities?"
