Shotgun, you reason, is always the right answer. Mysterious wind flares your trenchcoat behind you like a cape as you turn the corner shotgun drawn. The laughing pirates turn in slow-motion, realizing only too late that the face of the devil that stands before them. You unload two shells in succession, the first through Pirate One's skull and the other grazing Pirate Two on the shoulder. He falls backward screaming. The unconscious man in the middle collapses to the ground. Doves fly away and flowers fall to the ground dramatically as you approach the wounded pirate. Just for effect you pop out the used shells from your shotgun and reload. The pirate takes this opening to try and shoot you with his good arm, but his pistol is knocked out of his hand by a particularly badass shot by Thompson. You kick the gun out of his reach and stare down at him. Then, even though you JUST reloaded it, you simply knock him out with the butt of your shotgun.
"You're unconscious now." You declare. Burnnnn.
Satisfied with the copious amount of street cred you just earned, you turn to examine the unconscious man. Conveniently enough, he appears to be Engineer Chapman "Zone" Malcolm. The very officer you were looking for. He seems relatively unhurt, they must have knocked him out. Johnson hands you smelling salts (you wonder why he has these...) and you manage to rouse The Raven's engineer.
Chapman "Zone" Malcolm is young, barely older than you, but dangerously brilliant. He has rebuilt The Raven's engine room from scrap on several occasions, improving the ship's speed and maneuverability each time. Working with him is usually a delight, aside from his tendency to occasionally lapse into utter madness with neither provocation nor warning. Otherwise though, totally awesome guy.
He staggers to his feet, brushing the dirt off of him. "What happened?" he asks. "I was with... when a whole bunch of Pirates showed up. I stalked off to try and folow one of them and then...I may have gone mad for a moment there."
"They must have surprised you." you reply. "What were you trying to do down here?"
"Do you see these panels? If I had an external power source, I think I could tap into their computer network and figure out why these pirates are here."
"Well you are in luck friend!" You say boisterously. "I found this unexplainable power core in a weird robot Space-Vampire and I was going to give it to you anyway."
