You walk into the front office of the local impound lot. Behind the filthy counter is a man reading a porn magazine. He looks up from his erotica and meets your gaze. “Can I help you?” he asks.

Heart pounding, you reply; “yes, my car was towed. I believe you have it. It’s a black Expedition.”

“License plate number?”

You peer onto a piece of paper. The paper reads

Impound lot
Black Ford Expedition
2390-KN
under front seat
025

“2390-KN,” you read aloud.

He types something into his computer. After a moment, he says, “Yep, we have it. Just got it yesterday.”

“May I see it?”

He laboriously gets up from his desk and motions you to follow him. The two of you walk through the back door and out into the car lot. The bright mid-day sun beats down on your head and neck as you cross the car lot to the back corner. “So are you here to reclaim your car? Because it’s pretty beat up.”

"No, I just left some papers in the car,” you reply.

The man approaches a black Ford Explorer with the back bumper mashed in, the side all scratched up, and the back door mashed up and held to the car with rope. He asks you, “This the one?”

“Yeah, this is it. Gee, beat up is a bit of an understatement.”

“Someone used it for a robbery,” he says. “The police managed to stop them at the expense of the car.”

You open up the driver’s side door and reach under the seat. You pull out a black briefcase. “Thanks for your help,” you say, “but you can keep the car.”
