Elrond does not take much convincing. Like Gandalf, he has long suspected Sauruman's loyalty and felt concern regarding his quest for additional power. <br />
<br />
<br />
Elrond rally's the troops - Legolas was already in Rivendell for an upcoming council, and so was available to lead the archer contingent during the attack on Isengard. Gandalf wanted a preemptive strike - before Sauruman's army was ready, he wanted to destroy his machines of war.<br />
