Chicago, May 11th, 1920: The Four Deuces Bar
It's a busy night, but something in the air holds the usual uproar down to a subtle-but-steady ominous din. A kid, couldn't be more than 12-years old, climbs into a stool at the center of the bar, unphased by the stares and glares of elder patrons and staff around the club. Wide-eyed but scowling under a newsboy cap, the kid has the nerve to head-bob summons the bartender. When the head-bob fails to draw the barkeep's attention, the kid whistles, points and finger-wags for service.
The barkeep smiles, shaking his head, and points the youngster out to customers at the far end of the bar. A few more stern and shady glances and glares with no further action or reaction from the barman have the kid in an uproar.
Slamming an open palm across the bar repeatedly, revealing a fistful of cash which now splays across the hardwood bar, the kid coughs, glaring directly at the smug tender. A man seated on the last chair at the far end of the bar checks his watch, glances down the rail at the kid, and smiles, thumbing the barkeep to tend the youngster.
Reluctantly, the bartender trudges 6 paces down the bar, leaning over the hardwood and smiling at the cherubic scowl wobbling unsteadily in the high stool.
"What can I do for you, Sonny-Boy?" the bartender banters.
'Sonny-Boy?!' I'm a GIRL! head-butt the bartender order a double-shot of whiskey
