Follow John back into town?

You let out a sigh. "Alright, let's go see what they wish to take from us now."
You follow John on the path back to town. The break from working is much appreciated, you only wish that it was for something other than tax collection. It doesn't take long to reach town, and soon you and John arrive in the town square.
Standing on the announcement platform in the middle of the square, the king's tax collector is talking to a crowd of gathered villagers. "You all know you serve the king! The king who cares for you, who feeds you, the king who protects you! All he asks for in return is your loyalty! And this past tax collection from you lot was a complete and utter disgrace! The king feels you people need an example!" The tax collector looks around the crowd. His gaze falls on you and he stops, pointing directly at you. "You there! Come up here!"
What do you do?
Approach the platform on which the tax collector stands?
Shout, "ANARCHY!!!" and start swinging wildly with your hoe?
