You start to turn away, but Findonel stops you. "Hey, wait."

"What?" you ask.

"When do you get off work today?"

"In about two hours." you reply.

"If you don't have any other plans this afternoon, do you want to hang out?"

"Oh geez. I'm helping Sydney move this afternoon." You're truly disappointed.

He looks disappointed. "Well, if you get done early, give me a call." The elf takes a sip of his mint mocha and leaves the shop. The bells tinkle just a little longer than usual after the door closes behind him. They always do for elves.

You look around the shop. The morning rush is officially over, and you can breathe easy for a moment. You've been working the register all morning, which also means that you're making a lot of the drinks. Xavier has been helping you when he can, but as manager, he has other duties that come first.

Your friend Sydney has been working the drivethrough. As a dwarf, she's too short to reach the machines without a stool, so the managers usually station her on drive. Martin, whom you don't know well, has been making her orders.

In the lull, Sydney motions you over. "Did Findonel just ask you out?" she whispers loudly.

"No," you reply, "He asked me to hang this afternoon, but I'm helping you move, and that's kinda important."

Sydney shakes her head, making her blond beard sway. "I know you like him. Go! Hang out with him! My brothers will be helping me move. Between the eight of us, we can handle it."

The remaining two hours go by quickly. Yours and Xavier's replacements show up and put on their aprons. Just as you're taking yours off, Xavier motions you over. "Do you have a minute, Stella?"

"Sure." you reply.

"Beth's great-great-great-great grandfather died. They're holding the funeral in a week and a half, and she'll need two weeks off after that for all the ancillary ceremonies. We'll be down a manager. I've gotten special permission to train one of our employees as a temporary manager while she's gone. I think you could do well. You'd need to watch the training videos this afternoon, though. At midnight, they turn into pumpkins. You'd get a pay rise while you were an acting manager. What do you say?"
