Gandalf monitors Elrond as he travels back east, down the greenway towards Isengard. Along the way, they pick up several ents in the Old Forest. Upon arriving at Orthanc, they see that elves from Lothlorian have already taken the tower, with help from even more ents from Fangorn. Gandalf continues to lurk about unseen, appearing like an outcast refugee from one of the many battles. As the newly joined force moves east towards Minas Tirith and Mordor, they are attacked in the night by wild men. In this battle, Gandalf reveals himself and manages to save Arwen from death - which earns Elrond's trust back (since, now that they have no way to get to the undying lands, he wants his daughter to be happy and marry Aragorn). Galadriel, who could always read Gandalf's mind, says she also forgives him - but, she is slightly more wary of Gandalf going forward.

The Dark Elves use every weapon at their disposal, even recruiting the mighty eagles to their cause. These allies form the most terrifying force that Middle-earth has ever seen, and they quickly and viciously purge the continent of the Sauron's military. The most devastating battle is held in Rohan, when the Dark Elves and Rohirrim Calvary cornered and slaughtered half of Saurons soldiers (reinforcements that were headed to Orthanc) in a single battle. This bloodthirsty force then arrived at Minas Tirith at the same time as the Southern Navy and archers from Mirkwood, led by Tharanduril's son Legolas. With the Navy shelling the enemy from the River Anduin, this eleven army from Rivendell, Lothlorien, and Mirkwood joined the Rohirrim Cavalry and Gondorian infantry led by Boromir. Together, they easily repelled Sauron's invading forces and re-took Osgiliath. Not satisfied to simply defend the city, the elven lords and leaders of men consulted with Gandalf to determine their next move.
