Poke it

"Ha!" you snort. "That dumb circle doesn't lead anywhere." You grab a ruler from the desk and give the circle a sharp poke. Nothing happens.
"Hrrumph!" says the secretary. "I was going to have fun dropping this on you, too." He types in a computer command and you look up to see a guillotine in the ceiling. You jump back quickly as the blade falls, missing you but slicing 10 centimeters neatly off the end of the ruler.
The blade of the guillotine smacks into the floor and breaks apart. As you dodge, you instinctively catch one of the sharp metal fragments. It's about the size of a dagger.
