Unwrap the "bat"

You grab the wrapped "bat" and wonder if the lube was a last minute pack on top of a sports box. However, it is slightly odd that the object is wrapped in what feels like fine silk. As you unwrap it, you see the familiar gleam of polished wood and as you get all of the silk off, you realize your first assessment was correct; it is a bat. It looks old, but well maintained and has many signatures covering it, some that you recognize and some that you don't.
"I see you're a little bit nosy. Are you sure you don't have any cat in you?" Sam says quietly from behind you. You are ashamed that you were caught, but upon turning around are relieved to see that Sam is smiling in a sad way. You place the bat on the silk on the floor and she comes over to crouch next to you.
"It was my Dad's bat when he played for the major leagues." she explains, "He had it signed by all his teammates when he got in his accident and knew he couldn't play anymore." There is a weighted pause that you have no words of wisdom to fill. Sam doesn't seem to notice as she continues, "It was that injury that led him down a destructive path that would claim him years later. Would you like to see the album?" She doesn't pause between sentences and immediately reaches out for the album. She flips open a few pages and shows you a sepia-toned photo of her as a very young kitten sitting on her Father's shoulder on a baseball field. They are both smiling and it looks like it was the best time in her life.
You've officially learned way too much about Sam way too quickly. It's a little overwhelming.
