Check the waters for a weapon

You scan the slow-moving water until you spot exactly what you need: a chunk of wood you could use as a club. You grab it at it floats by. It’s a bit slimy, but still serviceable. You sneak forward and swing it at the rat.
The rat leaps into the air and lands on the end of your improvised club. You freeze. The rat locks its beady eyes on yours and charges up the club, towards your face.
