Gandalf explained to Bill that he owed the Fellowship his service - people had died, and it was his fault for selling information. Bill took the position - but out of spite, not loyalty.

Strider:

For some reason, Gandalf stays in Bree for a while. This has devastating consequences - Frodo is captured by the Riders, and Aragorn is killed. Now Gandalf has to team up with whoever was in Bree to try and catch up with the Riders. He forms a Fellowship to re-capture the ring, and hopefully rescue Frodo as well. This fellowship is made up of only men and hobbits:

* Gandalf

* Sam, who is focused on saving Frodo at all costs. Part of him also wants revenge for the death of Merry and Pippin.

* Halbarad, Ranger of the North trying to fill Aragorn's shoes.

* Nob, the hobbit who previously workerd at the Prancing Pony. Now he loyally serves Sawm in the same way that Sam used to serve Frodo.

* Mat Heathertoes, a teenager who happens to be very good with a crossbow.

* Goldberry, companion spirit to Tom Bombadil and power water sorceress.

He also has to think of someone new to rally the people and defeat Sauron - and now, it won't be their rightful king. He will have to turn to the Stewards of Gondor.

Bill Ferney is a mercenary - do you pay him for information, or have him join the Fellowship? He deals in coin and information, so he can be a valuable member of the team.

Strider:

When Gandalf offers to reward Bill for information, the mercenary smiled. "I only care about one thing, Wizard - and that's money. There is only one way for me to get the most money I can out of you - and that is to give you the most valuable thing I can offer. And right now - with this rag-tag group you're calling a Fellowship - the thing you need most is me. If you pay me what I'm worth, I'll help you get that halfling back. I already know where they will be keeping him - Isengard. Even better, I know how to get him out. Now, lets talk price."

Gandalf haggled as best he could, but in the end both parties were equally dissatisfied with the result. Considering that a successful compromise, Bill joined the team as the Fellowship's spy - who happened to be willing to do less savory deeds when needed (and compensated).

Along with his new Fellowship, Gandalf set out from Bree at breakneck speed - tracking the Dark Riders, who are also moving fast. By the time the Ringwraith's have reached Isengard, Gandalf and company had almost caught up.

After leaving a note for the hobbits with Butterbur and sending word to Aragorn that he is needed in Bree, Gandalf hastily makes his way south to Isenguard. He does not receive a warm welcome from Sauruman - in fact, the leader of the White Council astounds Gandalf by revealing his true desire: to serve Sauron as his deputy after helping him conquer the known world. He offers Gandalf a simple choice: join them, revealing the location of the Ring, or die.

Gandalf considers his options - if he can escape to Rivendell and warn Elrond, perhaps a force can be mustered to oppose the Uruk-hai orcish warriors that Sauruman has bred. He could also pretend to join Sauruman, revealing an incorrect location of the Ring so that the enemy is distracted until Gandalf works out his next move. Both of those options were too risky, he feared - if he managed to escape, who knows what terrible plan Sauruman would put in motion.

Sauruman proves to be too much for Gandalf, and he is overpowered. Gandalf is imprisoned atop Orthanc, allowing weeks to pass in which the hobbits and Aragorn do not know where Gandalf is. He is finally rescued by Gwaihier the eagle and taken to Edoras in Rohan. There, the king Theoden grants Gandalf any horse he wishes - and he claims (and tames) Shadowfax. There is only one place to go - Gandalf must get back to the Shire as quickly as possible, to confirm that the hobbits are still safe.

By the time Gandalf reaches the Shire, the hobbits have left. After consulting with the Gaffer and others, Gandalf races ahead to Bree. The place is a mess - Aragorn and the hobbits left only a few days before, and the town was attacked by dark riders and evil men that very night. The people of the town ask Gandalf to stay and help them, and they are in a desperate state.

Gandalf weighs his options - reminding himself that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. If he stays to liberate Bree from the evil men who have taken advantage of the chaos by taking over, he will be delayed in ariving at Rivendell.
It takes many days, but Gandalf eventually catches up with Aragorn and the hobbits - and just in time. They are under attack at Weathertop, and the Witch King is bearing down on a terrified Frodo. Just before he strikes, Gandalf calls out the name he was known by when he was a man. The lead Ringwraith turns and taunts Gandalf, stating "no man can kill me." Gandalf responds, "I am no man." and then slashes Glamdring between the cloaked figure's shoulder's and head. The Witch King is defeated (quite early in the war), and the other Ringwraiths flee. Frodo is safe and sound, and the party can continue on to Rivendell.

Because Frodo does not need any time to heal, Gandalf and Elrond start discussing plans immediately. The invited members to the council, including dwarves and men, have not yet arrived - but Gandalf decides to make a decision without them.

Strider: FOTR/ TP50-Gandalf races ahead to Rivendell moved to FOTR/ TP50-The Council of Elrond

Realizing that Aragorn would take the hobbits off of the main road, Gandalf races ahead once again - with a dark rider on his tail. He reaches Weathertop, a ruined tower which he is certain Aragorn would use as shelter when passing through the area. After leaving a sign that only Aragorn would recognize, Gandalf is attacked by four dark riders. He manages to escape, leading them away towards Rivendell. The black horse are no match for Shadowfax, and are soon left behind.

When Gandalf reaches Rivendell, he immediately updates Elrond and Glorfindel. The elven lord races back into the wilderness to try and assist Aragorn, giving Elrond and Gandalf more time to discuss recent events. They agree that the ring must be destroyed - and that a small, stealthy force would be best equipped to accomplish that. What they disagree on is the makeup of the force - Elrond trusts only elves and Aragorn with the task, while Gandalf prefers a more diverse fellowship.

A few days later, Glorfinel returns with an injured and unconscious Frodo - and Gandalf assists Elrond cast a spell that wipes out all nine Ringwraiths. When Frodo has mostly recovered from his wound, the council of Elrond is convened.

The council must make an important decision. The dwarves, elves, and men in attendance seem unable to agree - all want to take a different course of action. No one seems willing to make the most difficult choice - carrying the Ring to Mordor, and destroying it. That plan would rely on Frodo, who by this time had proven that he can carry the ring great distances without ill effect. But Frodo had just been injured, and was barely recovered - with that kind of wound, which would permanently impair even a strong man, how could he possible survive such a journey? As Gandalf is pondering these options, he glances down at Frodo. The young hobbit, who has already been through so much, is about to speak up - and Gandalf knows what he is going to say.
FOTR/ TP50-The Council of Elrond

Strider:

He has only a moment to interrupt Frodo, saving him from volunteering to join a hopeless quest. And if he does volunteer, which group should provide the necessary protection?

FOTR/Gandalf agrees to join Suaruman and Sauron

Strider:

Gandalf takes a huge risk, and leads Sauruman to believe that he is willing to turn evil. He leverages the power of his magic ring, giving an inspiring speech in favor of Sauron's goals. Sauruman is convinced, and only requires the location of the ring in order to completely trust Gandalf.

Gandalf hesitated. He had an opportunity to divert Sauruman's forces away from the Ring - but what would make the best diversion? The most logical location is Eriabor, since the ring was known to have been there at one time - but doing that would doom the people living in the surrounding area to relentless attacks. While frantically trying to think of a well-defended place that would suffer fewer casualties, the Gray Havens popped into Gandalf's head. It would take months for any significant force to travel that distance - and the elven defenses would be ready for them. That could allow the ringbearer to slip further east, getting closer and closer to Mordor and Mount Doom.

Gandalf was torn, and needed to provide an answer fast - but which one? Just as he was about to panic, he thought of one more story - that instead of heading towards Mordor, the ring was going north to Angmar. He would claim that fire drakes had been spotted nearby, most likely ones that had survived the attack on Gondolin centuries before. As everyone knew, Gandalf's lie would continue, the breath of a fire drake can destroy even the rings of power. Would Sauruman believe it? How well learned was he in dragons and ring-lore? He had recently become obsessed with the ring - wouldn't he know that it could only be destroyed in Mt. Doom?

Decision
What should Gandalf do?

* Gandalf selects Erebor, the Lonely Mountain - claiming the hobbit never returned home after Smaug was killed.

* Gandalf says the Ring is at the Gray Havens, because it will take Saruman's forces the longest time to get there.

* Gandalf tells Sauruman that the ring is going north, where they will find one of the fire drakes that attacked Gondolin and use it's breath to destroy the ring (which, unbeknownst to Sauruman, would actually work on the other rings of power - but not The One Ring).
FOTR/ TP40-Capture and Escape

Strider:

Aragorn and Elrond are highly capable - plus, they are backed up by heroes like Glorfindel. Can they truly manages without Gandalf's help?
Decision
You are still on Tolkien's path. What should Gandalf do?

* Gandalf decides to assist Aragorn, leaving Shadowfax in Bree and venturing into the wilderness. He is only slightly faster than Aragorn and the hobbits, so it takes him more time than expected to catch up.

* Gandolf cannot bear to leave the people of Bree in the state they are in. He stays for a few days to restore order to the town, even further trusting Aragorn's ability to avoid trouble when staying off the road.

The manipulation of Radagast has Gandalf convinced that Sauruman has gone too far, and can no longer be trusted. He considers the Palantir that may still be in Orthanc.

Elrond does not take much convincing. Like Gandalf, he has long suspected Sauruman's loyalty and felt concern regarding his quest for additional power.

Elrond rally's the troops - Legolas was already in Rivendell for an upcoming council, and so was available to lead the archer contingent during the attack on Isengard. Gandalf wanted a preemptive strike - before Sauruman's army was ready, he wanted to destroy his machines of war.

Strider:

Gandalf decides that the Ring cannot remain in the Shire. It has to go, and Frodo has to carry it. Frodo will be a hardy ringbearer - he is young and resilient, and has a good spirit that will want to help save the world.

This conclusion comes to him quickly - and he immediately sits Frodo down to explain the situation. As Gandalf expected, Frodo agrees to serve as ringbearer - what he did not expect was the gardener, Samwise Gamgee, tagging along as well.

Gandalf spends 2 months helping Frodo devise a plan to sneak out of the Shire with the Ring. He plan is to escort Frodo to Rivendell, meeting his friend Aragorn there. As the departure date approached, Gandalf decided to scout ahead and confirm that the roads near the Shire were safe. He told Frodo, "I am going down beyond the southern borders to get some news." On this journey, which was intended to be quick, he ran into Radagast the Brown - who implored him to seek the council of Sauruman. He was so insistent that Gandalf actually became somewhat suspicious of Radagast's intentions.

Strider:

The Fellowship of the Ring
This is part 1 of The Lord of the Wiki by Trey Long.

In a tower in the forest there lived a Wizard. Well, not really a Wizard - although that is what most people called him. Gandalf the Grey was a actually an Istari, one of the five Maiar spirits in human form that were sent to Middle-earth to oppose Sauron. Also known as The Lord of the Rings, Sauron was a fallen Maia who sought to conquer the world through death and destruction. It was Gandalf's mission to rally the free peoples of Middle-Earth (elves, dwarves, men, and hobbits) against him.

Gandalf appeared as an old, gray-haired man who required a staff to walk - but as an Istari, he wielded demi-god like power and a magic ring. The ring was called Narya, the ring of power, and it allowed him to rally and influence leaders of men and elves.

Gandalf did not actually live in the tower - but he had been a guest in Thranduil's halls for some time. The Elven King was holding an important prisoner, whom Gandalf and his friend Aragorn had been interrogating. Aragorn was one of the last Numenorian men, and the rightful heir to the Kingdom of Gondor. Gandalf had recruited Aragorn in 2956, when he was only 25 years old.

Gandalf and Aragorn had long suspected that the dark lord Sauron was growing in strength. Aragorn had captured Gollum, a pitiful but dangerous creature, in the nearby marshes. After interrogating him, they realized that Sauron was once again seeking the Ring. Sauron had also recently captured Gollum, and realized that the former hobbit had owned the One Ring (calling it his "Precious") for hundreds of years. Sauron tortured Gollum, and learned two names from him: "Baggins" and "Shire." When he realized he could learn no more, he released Gollum - not out of pity, but in hopes that he would also find the ring (with Sauron's spies and agents watching his every move).

Gandalf knew that if Sauron found the One Ring, his power would be unstoppable - and he would cover the world in death and darkness. He remembered the magic ring that his little friend Bilbo had found in Moria years ago, and begrudgingly left to his nephew Frodo just 17 years earlier. Gandalf now feared that it may be the One Ring that Sauron had forged, lost, and was looking for. He immediately traveled back to The Shire, to confirm his suspicion - one way or the other. Upon arriving at Bag-End, Gandalf had Frodo place the ring in the hot fireplace - which, instead of melting (as any other golden ring world), simply revealed the Black Tongue script. The appearance of that script proved that it was the One Ring to rule them all. Instantly, Gandalf's worst fear came true - the most powerful weapon in the world was in the Shire, and he was the only being in Middle-earth who knew it.

Gandalf considered his options. He knew the ring stored most of Sauron's power, and destroying it would end his enemy for good. That was literally what he was placed in Middle-earth to do - but he was to do it indirectly, by providing advice and support. The problem is, there is only one way to destroy such an artifact - and it was virtually impossible. Someone would have to get the ring to Mount Doom, and throw it into the lava. Mount Doom was in the middle of Mordor, which was literally the most barren and dangerous place in Middle-earth - surrounded by impassible mountains and protected by the well-guarded Black Gate. Disregarding that insurmountable challenge, how could he even transport the ring to Mordor? If he carried it, the temptation to wield it would quickly become too great. One thought gave him hope - he had noticed that the ring had barely impacted Bilbo, who had used it here and there for dozens of years. As another weak but resilient hobbit, perhaps Frodo could carry it the ring for a while - without doing too much damage to the little fellow. It would certainly have some impact - the One Ring stored an unspeakable amount of evil, after all. It seemed dangerous and foolish, but maybe he and Frodo could get the ring at least to Rivendell - then Gandalf and Elrond, the king of that Elven realm, could help devise and execute a plan to destroy it.

But maybe he should wield the Ring? He was already a powerful spirit, so the magnifying effect of the ring would increase his abilities to an unimaginable degree. On his finger, the ring would instantly place the Ringwraiths under his control - as well as every other being wearing a ring of power at the time (which could include incredibly powerful eleven lords and dwarven kings). He would become invincible in battle - and most mortal beings would flee from him in terror. The effect on Narnia would be multiplied, so that instead of simply inspiring others, he would be able to control the minds of anyone - even the most powerful men and elves. He could use this power to raise an enormous army - one that would feel no fear as it attacked Mordor. He would easily breach the Black Gate, climb mount doom, and... would he be able to destroy the Ring?

He knew any travel would be treacherous. The Shire is so far from Mordor, it would take months for the Ringwraiths to find it. He could summon the Ents and the Rangers. They could put up a strong defense - for a while. Eventually, they would have to leave the Shire with the Ring - but where else could they go? Perhaps Cirdan the Shipwright would allow the ring to be transported to the undying lands - the one place Sauron and his forces could never reach? That would doom the mortal men to years of war with Sauron's forces - a war that they may not survive. Sauron would never stop searching for the ring, even if he had to destroy every dwelling and kill every elf, dwarf, and man in Middle-earth. Also, would Cirdan allow passage?

He was so unsure. His decision in this moment would have far-reaching implications - was even equipped to make it? Perhaps he should do nothing, and quickly seek out other council. No one else knew the Ring was here - it would be safe for a while longer. The more he thought about it, he probably had weeks - maybe even months. How long would the ring be safe in the Shire if he left it under care of the Rangers? Perhaps he could seek out the advice of Sauruman, or even the entire White Council. Or he could prepare the men of Rohan and Gondor for war. Maybe the elven Lords would have ideas that he has not thought of. These were all fine reasons to leave the ring in the Shire for a while.

Decision
Which choice should Gandalf make? As will always be the case, the first choice listed is Tolkien's Path.

* Gandalf should get the ring out of the Shire. He and Frodo can carefully devise a plan to slip away without drawing too much attention.

* Gandalf can't make the poor hobbit carry the ring on a treacherous journey. Instead, they will fortify and defend the Shire.

* Gandalf will leave the Ring in the Shire, setting out to seek the counsel of others.

* Gandalf will place the ring on his finger, and feel it's power magnify his own - making him an unstoppable force for good.

Strider:

A surprising urge leaps in Gandalf's chest as he realizes how powerful the artifact in front of him is. With this ring, he can destroy Sauron - and bring order to the rest of the world. He will accomplish his mission as a Maiar - and he would be one of the few to do so.

"Frodo, give me the ring." Of course, the little hobbit hesitates - not only becuase of the natural urge to covet the One Ring, but also because he is genuinely surprised that Gandalf wants it. "Why," Frodo asks. "What are you going to do with it?"

"I am going to use it, dear Frodo. You see, it is a powerful weapon - and it is the only thing that can defeat our enemy in the east. He forged it, long ago - and in it he placed most of his power. It will make me strong enough to defeat him, and bring peace to every part of Middle-earth."

Frodo found himself knowing that was a good idea, but not liking it nonetheless - for some reason, he simply did not want Gandalf to wear the ring. He had no idea why. "No," he found himself saying. "Bilbo left it to me. It's mine. It's... precious to me."

Gandalf's mind had already started to consider how powerful he would become once he was wearing the Ring. There was no time for delay - he needed to be wearing it right away. He could not be bothered with this young, immature, complaining hobbit - so he killed him, and took the Ring. Now, Gandalf only needed to decide what to do first with his new-found power.

FOTR/seek the counsel of others

Strider:

Gandalf began arrangements for a meeting of the White Council at the Gray Havens. This had to be done in utter secrecy, so that the enemy would not know that the leaders of the free peoples were convening in one place - even if that place was protected by some of the strongest magic in the world.

Careful communication took a long time, and it was some months before he could arrange for all of the members of the White Council to be with Cirdan at the Gray Havens. Cirdan never left his post, and sent counselors to White Council meetings held elsewhere. By arranging for this meeting to take place in his city, Gandalf was making it clear that Cirdan had to participate in person - sending the signal that the topic was urgent.

Before he left Hobitton, he met with Strider - who had strengthened the watch of rangers protecting the Shire. Gandalf had planned all along for the Ring to stay in the Shire, guarded by the little hobbits - who were least likely to be corrupted by it. He did not want the ring to be nearby the members of the White Council, who were literally the most powerful beings in Middle Earth (after Sauron).

As often happens, Gandalf's plan does not work out. The Shire is attacked by the Ringwraiths - and many hobbits are killed in the defense. Gandalf must bring Frodo and Sam with him - but as they are trying to escape Hobbiton, they are trapped. Gandalf and Strider draw swords, and prepare to defend Frodo and Sam - knowing that they are surely outnumbered, and that their adventure is over before it even got out of the Shire. At the last moment, Galadrial appears - and uses the white phial against the riders, who are severely injured and retreat. She is travelling alone to avoid notice, and had seen the burning fires of the Shire on her way to the Grey Havens. Now, she forms a Fellowship with Gandalf, Aragorn, Frodo, and Sam - and they begin the journey to the Gray Havens. On the road, Gandalf discusses what to do about the Ring with Aragorn and Galadrial.

Decision
Gandalf is afraid of what could happen if he leaves Frodo alone, or tries to take him into the wilderness before he is ready. So, he sends word to Bree (via a dwarf passing through) that defense forces are needed, and that Aragorn is to rally the Rangers and other Men of the North to defend the Shire.

After a short time, the Rangers (led by Halbarad) arrive in the Shire - large, stern men who look well-traveled and grim. They arrive just in time - as the Ringwraiths are about to attack, the Rangers organize hobbit archers with flaming arrows for a defense. The battle is costly, but the Ringwraiths are thwarted.

(There is a downside to their victory - for the enemy now knows there is something worth defending in the Shire. Gandalf does not know it, but Sauruman is getting ready to push his Uruk-Hai forces north to attack the Shire and claim the ring.)

In half a moment, Galadrial has gone mad - and can see only one answer to her madness. Everyone around her is evil - so she must strike them all down. Using her augmented ability t get inside the heads of others, she scrambles the most powerful mind in her vicinity - which happens to be Gandalf's. His human body collapses to the floor, his staff clattering as it hits the ground. His Maiar spirit drifts away, to seek another form and hopeful resume the fight against Sauron.

In the chaos, men controlled by the Ringwraiths take over Bree, making that part of the Shire impassable.

Strider:

The Lord of the Wiki
This is a fan-fiction version of each of the Lord of the Rings books, told from the first person (not omniscient) perspective of one of the main protagonists. Each choice represents an opportunity for departure from the choices made by the main character in Tolkien's books. In each case, the first choice is the option taken by the character in the book. In this way, the reader can decide when they want to deviate from the story in the book, while enjoying the story from a slightly different perspective.

If you edit this wiki, please create a new choice at one of the existing choices. From that point on, you should only create your own choices - you should not "re-join" an existing story. As you add additional follow-up options in your story, others may edit your pages as well (by adding options).

To avoid having ads on this free website, the administrator has wisely set a throttle on page refresh rates. That means you can't quickly click through this (or any other) story. If you are reading each page and carefully considering each option, this should not be an issue at all. Just be warned, if you are moving too fast, you may see the following message:

Page loads per second hit - limit 2. Wait a moment or two and try reloading

The War of the Ring - your way
As indicated above, each story has a different main character. You will control the keys decisions that character makes, only knowing what they know. In some cases, this requires inventing main story ("Tolkien's Path") details that are only alluded to in appendices and other Tolkien writings.

Gandalf watches over the ringbearer and leads the expedition to destroy it in The Fellowship of the Ring.

Aragorn attempts to rescue Merry and Pippin and liberates Rohan in The Two Towers.

Frodo sneaks through Mordor, destroys the Ring, and liberates The Shire in The Return of the King.

Careful communication took a long time, and it was some months before he could arrange for all of the members of the White Council to be with Cirdan at the Gray Havens. Cirdan never left his post, and sent counselors to WHite Council meetings held elsewhere. My arranging this meeting to take place in his city, Gandalf was sending a signal that the topic was urgent.

Before he left Hobitton, he met with Strider - who had strengthened the watch of rangers protecting the Shire. Gandalf had planned all along for the Ring to stay in the Shire, guarded by the little hobbits - who were least likely to be corrupted by it. He did not want the ring to be nearby the members of the Council, who were literally the most powerful beings in Middle Earth after Sauron.

At the last moment, Galadrial appears - and use the white phial against the riders, who are severely injured and retreat. She is travelling along to avoid notice, and had seen the burning fires of the Shire on her way to the Grey Havens. Now, she forms a Fellowship with Gandalf, Aragorn, Frodo, and Sam - and they begin the journey to the Gray Havens. On the road, Gandalf discusses what to do about the Ring with Aragorn and Galadrial.

Decision
What should the Fellowship do about the Ring?

* Bring it to the White Council, and let them know they have the Ring with them.

* Lie, and say the Ring is still in Hobbiton.

* Gandalf decides to give the Ring to Galadrial right away - She can use it to destroy Sauron's mind.
FOTR/the crossing of Caradhras

Strider:

The fellowship presses on, but at great cost. Gandalf's human body is too frail to help anyone but himself, and all of his energy is spent casting protection spells against the hurling boulders and blinding snow. Aragorn carries Frodo, and Legolas carries Sam - but Boromir and Gimli are not strong enough to both carry Merry and Pippin and keep moving forward. Both refuse to leave the young hobbits behind. The rest of the fellowship continues on without them, and hopes for the best.

Finally, the five remaining members of the fellowship reach the Dimrill Stair that leads down into Azanulbizar, near the exit from Moria. They pause briefly and mourn the loss of four of their companions - a terrible cost indeed. As they leave the valley, they pass the doors to Moria and wonder if that option would have somehow been even worse.

Accompanied by Gandalf, the party arrives in Lothlorien. Gandalf consults with Galadriel - together, they peer into her mirror and try to interpret the visions they see. It was clear that the quest must continue - but there were many ways that could be undertaken.

Decision
What should Gandalf do?

* Accept Galadrial's gifts (which are much more suited to subterfuge and combat) and continue towards Mordor.

* Travel with a battalion of Lorien Archers to Minas Tirith, preparing to help defend the city against Sauron's looming attack.

* Gandalf gives the ring to Galadrial, asking her to wield it against Sauron.

* Gandalf decides to hide the ring in Lorien.
