You've never met a Hiroxian before, they are rumored to be very reclusive. You consider yourself to be open-minded when it comes to aliens, but you aren't happy about having Thenalak on board. She is the only nonhuman assigned to the Excalibur. Stories of Hiroxians make you uneasy. You've heard that Hiroxian culture is brutal; full of bloodshed and violence. You push the com button and ask Lieutenant Thenalak to come to your office.

"I'm on my way" she answers.

A few minutes later your door chimes.

"Come in" you say.

The door opens and Thenelak walks in. She has long blue hair that she keeps in a braid. For the most part her skin is very light purple, almost white, but there are darker areas around the side of her head that go down her neck. It looks like she is wearing heavy purple eye shadow, but that is just natural pigmentation for her. The eyes themselves look human, but the iris is golden. She has no eyebrows. You notice how human her nose looks. Her lips are dark purple, nearly black, and her teeth are all pointed. The only other part of her that isn't covered by here uniform are her hands, which are frightening. She has five fingers and on each one there is a 3 inch claw. She could probably slash a person to death with little effort. You can imagine her being the monster a child imagines is hiding under his bed, but she is still attractive in a strange way.

"Lieutenant Thenalak reporting as ordered sir" she says.

"Have a seat" you say.

She sits down in the chair on the other side of your desk.

"I'd like to know more about you Lieutenant." you begin. "I don't know much about Hiroxians..."

"Hiroxi" she interrupts.

"I beg your pardon?"

"You said 'Hiroxians,' the plural form of Hiroxian is Hiroxi."

"Oh, I see. Tell me more about the Hiroxi."

"Can you be more specific sir?"

"Where are you from? Tell me about your home."

"I come from River City in the Yamira Province of Hirox."

"Why did you leave Hirox?"

"It's a personal matter, I'd rather not discuss it sir."

You're beginning to become annoyed. You can tell that she isn't going to give you much information, but you continue anyways.

"Very well. Oh, I read in you're personnel file that you are 44 years old, is that right?"

"I believe so sir, at least by Earth's calendar. A year on Hirox lasts longer than a year on Earth, it has been a while since I sat down and did the math to figure out my age."

"Well, you certainly don't look 44" you say trying to sound friendly.

"Thank you sir, I'm actually young for a Hiroxian."

"Oh really? What's the average life expectancy for Hiroxians, I mean Hiroxi." You're finally getting somewhere with her.

"The average Hiroxian lifespan is 180 Earth years I believe, however I've been told some of my ancestors lived to be 200."

"Wow, I'd like to know more about your people, other than a long life span, do the you have any other strange characteristics?"

"Strange? Well, I guess there are a few things about me that are different, but they are normal for me."

"Of course, sorry, but please continue."

"For one thing, I can breathe under water."

"Really? That's amazing. So are you an amphibian? You have hair so that would suggest you're a mammal..."

"I am a pseudo-mammal. Not quite mammal, but not quite amphibian either."

"I see. What else?"

"I have a series of organs in both my forearms which allow me to produce electricity, much like the electric eel of your world, but they can produce more electricity than I can."

"That's... frightening." you say.

"There is one more thing," she continues. "I have low level psychic ability."

"Psychic? Explain."

"I can read minds under certain conditions, I'm also susceptible to picking up the psychic energy of higher level psychic beings."

"Can you read my mind?" You are becoming concerned. You don't like the idea of anyone invading you mind. You also don't want Thenalak to know exactly what you think of her.

"I'd rather not," she replies. "The act of mind reading requires a great deal of effort and would be rather unpleasant for both of us."

You are somewhat relieved. "You mean I would be able to tell if you were trying to read my mind?"

"Most certainly, I'd have make physical contact with you and you would be able to 'sense' me in your mind."

"Well, this all very interesting and I'd love to talk to you more sometime, but now I'd better let you get back do your duties."

"Thank you sir, I look forward to serving under you." She stands up and leaves your office. You feel somewhat better about her now that you've gotten to know her a little better, but you're still not sure.

"It is, I'm from Manchester."

"Ah, very good. I asked you in here because I want to get to know my officers before we set off on our mission."

"Your file says you joined Space Command nine years ago. With four years at the academy, that means you've been practicing medicine for five years now?"

"Yes sir, that's correct."

"Please don't take this the wrong way, but five years of medicine seems awfully short for the chief physician of a space vessel."

"No, you're right. Normally five years wouldn't be enough to earn this position, but I assure you my medical prowess is up to the challenge."

"Oh? What makes you think so?"

"Two years ago, while I was serving on Space Station 14, there was an outbreak of the Sagittarius Virus..."

"The Sagittarius Virus? That's lethal isn't it?"

"Chances of survival are typically 4%."

"And there's no treatment, right?"

"Wrong" she smiles. "There was no treatment until two years ago."

"You found a cure?" you say in amazement.

"Yes I did, before the virus could claim even a single life."

"Well doctor, I am impressed and I feel that this ship's health is in good hands."

"Thank you captain."

"And do you think you'll be able to treat any aliens we may encounter?"

"I have to admit, I've never treated anything other than humans, but I believe I'm up to it. I find alien physiology fascinating. I've already started studying Lieutenant Thenalak... she's incredible."

Lieutenant Thenalak is the only alien aboard Excalibur.

"Yes, I imagine she is. Well doctor, I won't keep you from your studies any longer. Thank you for your time."

"It's my pleasure" she says as she rises from her seat. "Good day to you sir."

"The way I see it, I'm you're right hand man. You tell me something needs doing and I make sure it gets done."

"Good, I appreciate the support, but I'd like you're input whenever you think I've overlooked something. I don't need a 'yes man.'"

"Oh you may come to regret that sir" he laughs.

She could probably slash a person to death with little effort. You can imagine her being the monster a child imagines is hiding under his bed, but she is still attractive in a strange way.

"Lieutenant Thenalak reporting as ordered sir" she says.

"Have a seat" you say.

She sits down in the chair on the other side of your desk.

"I'd like to know more about you Lieutenant." you begin. "I don't know much about Hiroxians..."

"Hiroxi" she interrupts.

"I beg your pardon?"

"You said 'Hiroxians,' the plural form of Hiroxian is Hiroxi."

"Oh, I see. Tell me more about the Hiroxi."

"Can you be more specific sir?"

"Where are you from? Tell me about your home."

"I come from River City in the Yamira Province of Hirox."

"Why did you leave Hirox?"

"It's a personal matter, I'd rather not discuss it sir."

You're beginning to become annoyed. You can tell that she isn't going to give you much information, but you continue anyways.

"Very well. Oh, I read in you're personnel file that you are 44 years old, is that right?"

"I believe so sir, at least by Earth's calendar. A year on Hirox lasts longer than a year on Earth, it has been a while since I sat down and did the math to figure out my age."

"Well, you certainly don't look 44" you say trying to sound friendly.

"Thank you sir, I'm actually young for a Hiroxian."

"Oh really? What's the average life expectancy for Hiroxians, I mean Hiroxi." You're finally getting somewhere with her.

"The average Hiroxian lifespan is 180 Earth years I believe, however I've been told some of my ancestors lived to be 200."

"Wow, I'd like to know more about your people, other than a long life span, do the you have any other strange characteristics?"

"Strange? Well, I guess there are a few things about me that are different, but they are normal for me."

"Of course, sorry, but please continue."

"For one thing, I can breathe under water."

"Really? That's amazing. So are you an amphibian? You have hair so that would suggest you're a mammal..."

"I am a pseudo-mammal. Not quite mammal, but not quite amphibian either."

"I see. What else?"

"I have a series of organs in both my forearms which allow me to produce electricity, much like the electric eel of your world, but they can produce more electricity than I can."

"That's... frightening." you say.

"There is one more thing," she continues. "I have low level psychic ability."

"Psychic? Explain."

"I can read minds under certain conditions, I'm also susceptible to picking up the psychic energy of higher level psychic beings."

"Can you read my mind?" You are becoming concerned. You don't like the idea of anyone invading you mind. You also don't want Thenalak to know exactly what you think of her.

"I'd rather not," she replies. "The act of mind reading requires a great deal of effort and would be rather unpleasant for both of us."

You are somewhat relieved. "You mean I would be able to tell if you were trying to read my mind?"

"Most certainly, I'd have make physical contact with you and you would be able to 'sense' me in your mind."

"Well, this all very interesting and I'd love to talk to you more sometime, but now I'd better let you get back do your duties."

"Thank you sir, I look forward to serving under you." She stands up and leaves your office. You feel somewhat better about her now that you've gotten to know her a little better, but you're still not sure.

You've never liked going to the doctor, but you respect their dedication. You press the com button and ask Dr. Russell to come to your office.

"Right away sir" she replies.

Moments later the door chimes.

"Enter" you call out.

Dr. Russell comes through the door and gracefully approaches your desk. She's a tall woman with long brown hair and stunning blue eye. You can't help but notice her beauty and elegance.

"You wanted to see me sir?" she asks.

"Yes," you answer. "Please, have a seat."

"Thank you" she says as she lowers herself into the chair on the opposite side of your desk.

"Is that a British accent?"

"It is, I'm from Manchester."

"Ah, very good. I asked you in here because I want to get to know my officers before we set off on our mission."

"A wise decision sir."

"Your file says you joined Space Command nine years ago. With four years at the academy, that means you've been practicing medicine for five years now?"

"Yes sir, that's correct."

"Please don't take this the wrong way, but five years of medicine seems awfully short for the chief physician of a space vessel."

"No, you're right. Normally five years wouldn't be enough to earn this position, but I assure you my medical prowess is up to the challenge."

"Oh? What makes you think so?"

"Two years ago, while I was serving on Space Station 14, there was an outbreak of the Sagittarius Virus..."

"The Sagittarius Virus? That's lethal isn't it?"

"Chances of survival are typically 4%."

"And there's no treatment, right?"

"Wrong" she smiles. "There was no treatment until two years ago."

"You found a cure?" you say in amazement.

"Yes I did, before the virus could claim even a single life."

"Well doctor, I am impressed and I feel that this ship's health is in good hands."

"Thank you captain."

"And do you think you'll be able to treat any aliens we may encounter?"

"I have to admit, I've never treated anything other than humans, but I believe I'm up to it. I find alien physiology fascinating. I've already started studying Lieutenant Thenalak... she's incredible."

Lieutenant Thenalak is the only alien aboard Excalibur.

"Yes, I imagine she is. Well doctor, I won't keep you from your studies any longer. Thank you for your time."

"It's my pleasure" she says as she rises from her seat. "Good day to you sir."

You watch as she leaves and think to yourself, "If I ever pick up an alien germ, I'll be glad to have her around."

Those mines have you immobilized, but you have the finest crew in all of Space Command and they are always at the ready to give you creative solutions to get you out of tight spots.

"How fast can we move without setting off the mines?" you ask.

"There is no way to be sure," Lieutenant Thenalak answers. "But I've seen similar devices before, they generally do not detonate until speeds reach 1000 kilometers per hour."

"And how many mines have attached themselves to the hull?"

"Scanners indicate six mines sir."

"Alright Ensign Knight, try to shake these damn things off. But keep speeds below 900 KPH."

"Yes sir." Ensign Knight says. She turns back to the ship's helm controls and breathes in deep, holds the breath in for a moment, and exhales slowly. "Here we go."

Excalibur slowly begins to move through space as the young woman at the helm works the controls.

"We're at 850 KPH" Knight says. "I'm going to try a hard-to-port maneuver."

Excalibur jerks 90° to the left.

"One of the mines has detached from the hull." Thenalak says.

"Alright," Knight says. "Lets try a hard-to-starboard next."

She skillfully works the controls and the ship jerks right.

"Two more mines have detached" Thenalak reports.

"Nice job" Commander Jenkins says.

"Thank you sir" Knight replies. "Lets see if we can get the inertia to pull some of 'em off. I'm going to perform an emergency stop."

Excalibur's reverse thrusters fire and the ship abruptly stops.

"Two more mines are gone" Thenalak says. "Just one more."

"I'm worried about the amount of stress we're putting on the engines sir" says Martinez.

"Understood Lieutenant," you say. "Ensign Knight, we can't keep this up much longer, you need to get that mine off with the next maneuver."

"Okay," she says. "I'm going to engage the starboard thruster on each of the engines, once we've generated a nice corkscrew I'll disengage the starboard thrusters and engage the port thrusters."

The ship spins and spins, you are thankful that the inertial-compensators are working or you would be very dizzy by now. You are even more thankful for them when Ensign Knight reverses the thrusters or you would have a nasty case of whiplash.

"The last mine is off." Lieutenant Thenalak announces.

"Great job ensign," you say. "Lieutenant Martinez, how are the engines?"

"The sheering stress has caused buckling on the nacelle mounts of engines 1,3, and 4. We're going to have keep the speed down or they may fail completely." he replies.

"Very well. Lieutenant Thenalak, continue mapping out the nebula."

You complete the charting of the nebula with no further incidents. However, the damage you sustained causes the work to slow down and you finish behind schedule.

You have successfully mapped out the Dark Nebula. Nice work, these charts will allow space freighters to cut down on their travel time significantly.
However, you fell into a mysterious trap and your ship was damaged. You need to be more careful in the future.

"Lieutenant Thenalak," you start. "Your idea seems risky, do you really think you can pull it off?"

"I do not plan to pull the mines off of the hull captain," she explains. "But I believe I can safely disarm each mine individually."

"Very well, make the necessary preparations."

"Aye sir" she says calmly. Thenalak turns and leaves the bridge.

"Lieutenant Martinez, how many mines are attached to the hull?" you ask.

"I'm reading six sir." he answers.

In minutes the com channel squawks on, the voice of Thenalak is coming through, "I'm stepping through the airlock now captain."

"Proceed carefully." you warn.

"I'm approaching the first mine. The primary detonation mechanism is motion activated. There is a secondary detonation mechanism... it appears to be triggered by a polarity inversion..."

"Yikes," says Martinez. "Good thing the captain didn't listen to me."

"Indeed," Thenalak agrees. "The warhead is an elemental fusion device. If I can remove the triggering element, the warhead will be rendered harmless. It will require a steady hand, but I believe I can do it."

"Proceed," you say with trepidation.

"I have removed the first trigger. I will proceed to the second mine. I am removing the second trigger... got it. Moving on to number three."

"C'mon Lieutenant. You can do it." Ensign Knight whispers to herself.

"Third warhead neutralized. I'm at the fourth... I've got the trig--"

Suddenly a pocket of plasma ignites near the ship shaking it violently.

"Thenalak? Thenalak come in!" you plead into the com system.

"Sir," Martinez interjects. "I'm reading a radiation spike in the fourth mine. The detonation mechanism has been triggered."

"Thenalak!"

"I'm here captain." she finally replies. "That blast caused me to activate the detonation sequence... don't worry though, I've shut it down. Mine four.. mine four is... um..."

"Thenalak? Whats going on?"

"I think I know captain," says Martinez. "When the fourth mine activated it let out a huge burst of radiation... I'm pretty sure Thenalak has just taken a massive dose of radiation."

"I'm suiting up." Cmdr. Jenkins says as he rises and heads for the airlock.

"Make it quick Commander." you say. "Thenalak, its time to come back in."

"Hold on captain... I almost got... five..." her speech is becoming strained.

"No Thenalak, you need to get back in here now."

"Captain, I'm stepping out" Cmdr Jenkins says over the com.

"One... more..." Thenalak says weakly.

"I've got eyes on her captain" Jenkins says. "She's trying to disarm the last mine."

"Get her Commander" you say anxiously. You push the com button to signal the infirmary. "Doctor Russell, be prepared to receive a casualty. Thenalak has taken a large dose of radiation."

"Understood" the doctor says, the concern clear in her voice.

"I've got her" says Jenkins. "She' was able to disarm the last mine sir."

"Whats her condition Commander?" you ask.

"She's unconscious. I can see lesions on her face through her helmet. Is her blood supposed to be black?"

"That’s normal for a Hiroxian commander" you answer.

"Oh, okay... Alright, we're back inside sir."

"Get her to the infirmary Commander. Ensign Knight move us to a safe distance from the mine field."

"Aye sir" she says as she works the controls.

"I'll be in the infirmary" you say as you head for the lift. You ride down with a sick feeling in your stomach. You enter the infirmary as Doctor Russell is administering a treatment to your science officer. Thenalak doesn't look good, and that's saying something considering she normally looks like she's covered in slime. "How is she?" you ask Jenkins.

Jenkins shakes his head, "I don't know."

Doctor Russell hears you, "She'll be just fine. She's lucky actually. I've been studying her anatomy, If I hadn't I wouldn't have known where to begin treating her. And the Hiroxi are tough. Their cellular structure allows them to to survive much higher levels of radiation than humans."

"Thank God" you mutter as Ensign Patton walks into sickbay. He looks at the Lieutenant and then at you. "She'll be fine Ensign" you assure him. He sighs in relief.

"Um, the nebula sir," he stammers. "We've collected the last of the data. We've got all we need to map out the Dark Nebula."

"Good job Ensign, she said you were the man for the job."

"She's a generous boss sir."

"You don't want to put that to the test Ensign." Thenalak mutters without even opening her eyes, but she does manage to flash a slight smile.

You were tasked with charting the Dark Nebula, you finished the task ahead of schedule. Well done. These charts will allow space freighters to cut down on their travel time significantly.

"Lieutenant Martinez," you say. "Prepare to re-polarize the hull."

"Aye sir." he replies. "Lieutenant Thenalak, will you assist me please?"

"Of course." she says. They go to work on the appropriate circuitry. In no time the ship's hull is ready to be re-polarized.

"We're ready captain." Martinez announces.

"Alright," you say. "Lets make this happen."

Lieutenant Martinez presses the control panel and every bulkhead hums as the polarity shifts. You would laugh at the sight of Ensign Knight's hair standing straight up if the stakes weren't so terrifying.

"The mines are starting to come loose!" Martinez exclaims.

"No!" Thenalak gasps. "I'm reading a spike in the radioactive field of the mines. The new polarity has activated the detonation mechanism... they're going to explode!"

"Martinez!" you shout. "Shut off the--"

At that moment the mines explode. The detonations rip the hull of the Excalibur to shreds. The last thing you see is shrapnel tearing through your shipmates. You feel metal pierce your body, but you don't have time to bleed out because the bulkheads rip away and you are blown out into the void of space.

Back home they talk of the doomed voyage of the Excalibur- the ship that ventured into the darkness... and became one with the darkness.

Have your science team begin charting the nebula?

"The Dark Nebula..." you begin to wax poetic. "No one has ever come this close and lived to tell the tale. It's exact size, shape, composition, all of it is unknown. Well... not for long. Keep your eyes peeled everyone, if you find something noteworthy it will probably get named after you. Lieutenant Thenalak, calibrate the sensor array for a full scan and begin mapping out the nebula."

"Calibrating sensor array..." the alien replies. "Sensors online. Beginning scan." She presses the com button, "Thenalak to Stellar Cartography Lab, are you receiving sensor data?"

Ensign Patton's voice answers, "Stellar cartography is receiving, but signal is somewhat garbled. Is there any way to clean this up a bit? I don't want to miss anything."

"Diagnostics on the sensor array indicate a faulty expansion coil. Mister Martinez, can you spare anyone to repair the coil?"

"I've got just the man for the job." Martinez answers pressing the com button. "Martinez to Jones, they need an engineer in the stellar cartography lab, got any ideas on who might be up the challenge?"

"I doubt the existence of any challenge," Lieutenant Jones responds. "But I'm bored so I'll go take a look."

Martinez chuckles at his officer's semi-serious arrogance, "Good man Jones." He releases the com button and turns back to the science officer. "This sort of thing is Jonesy's bread and butter."

Thenalak cocks her head to one side and furrows her brow, "What is the significance of Lieutenant Jones's meal preferences?"

Commander Jenkins and Lieutenant Martinez laugh, Ensign Knight turns away to hide the fact that she is trying not to laugh at the confused scientist. You've got quite a crew.

---LATER---

The mission is proceeding remarkably well. Lieutenant Jones not only repairs the sensor array, but he works with Ensign Patton to boost sensor efficiency. You are ahead of schedule. It seems Jones's arrogance is well earned. You are relaxing in the captain's chair when Lieutenant Thenalak interrupts the calm...

"Captain," she begins. "I'm picking up metallic objects on the scanners... it looks like a debris field."

"Debris eh?" you respond. "Perhaps a survey vessel much like ours, trying to map the nebula and got caught in a plasma storm."

"It is possible, there is a high amount of plasma activity in the area... its interfering with my instruments. We'll have to get in closer if we want to examine the debris any further."

"Yes, lets see if we can find out who those poor fellows were. Ensign, bring us in close, but mind the plasma storms."

"Aye aye sir." the perky little blonde sings her response.

As Excalibur gets closer the readings become clearer and Lieutenant Thenalak becomes uncharacteristically anxious.

"Reverse course!" she cries.

"Reversing course." Ensign Knight echoes, moving the controls to comply.

"Whats wrong?" asks Commander Jenkins.

The ship is suddenly jolted be several small impacts. They don't feel large enough to be weapons fire or meteor impacts.

"What the hell was that?" you ask.

"All Stop!" Thenalak shrieks.

"Answering all stop." Knight answers with a touch of concern in her voice.

"Lieutenant," you begin. "What is going on?"

Thenalak hesitates as if she were waiting to see if something would happen and then she says, "The metallic objects are not debris after all," she explains. "They are proximity activated electro-magnetic mines. Whoever put them out there used the plasma storm to mask them from scanners. By the time we got close enough to see what they really were, their proximity detectors had activated and they magnetized."

"Those impacts...?" Commander Jenkins asks.

"The mines have attached themselves to the ship's hull. They are surely armed by now, if we move, they will detonate."

"I want options." you say.

Martinez: "If we reverse the polarity of the hull, that should repel the mines."

Thenalak: "I suggest a space walk, I may be able to disarm the warheads one at a time if I can get direct access to them."

Knight: "If we fly slowly and perform some evasive maneuvers, I may be able to shake them off without detonating them."

The Bridge of the Excalibur is in shambles and the fate of the ship rest in the hands of a frightened 19 year old girl. Ensign Knight is shaking like a leaf, the poor girl is on the verge of panic.

You rush over to her and grab her firmly by the shoulders.

"Ensign Knight!" you shout. "I need you to pull it together. You are this ship's navigator, its up to you now."

"I-I can't" she whimpers. "I'll just mess it up again."

"Lindsay, this was not your fault. I gave you the order to fly into the nebula, it was me. Do you understand? It was me. This is not your fault."

Ensign Knight becomes very still as the panic subsides. She is still very scared, but she nods her head.

"Okay" she says. "I can do this. I can do this."

"Good girl. Thenalak, show her how to read the new sensor data."

Thenalak moves swiftly to the navigation controls and explains to Knight how to read the new data.

"These sensor have a short range," she warns. "so you will need to react quickly."

"And remember," Chief Engineer Martinez interjects. "Thrusters only! If you try to use the booster engines while the inertial-compensators are offline, we'll all just be splats on the back wall."

"Thruster. Got it." says Ensign Knight, sounding a little more confident.

She grasps the controls firmly. Beads of sweat roll down her brow as she tries to concentrate on the sensor read out. The data tells the tale, she sees a pocket of plasma off the starboard bow about to burst... her hands fly across the control panel adjusting course and speed. The ship gently rumbles as the plasma ignites... that was close. Everything is a mess, small fires burn on control panels. Cmdr. Jenkins chokes on the smoke slowly filling the room. Ensign Knight can feel the blood running down her cheek and dripping off her chin. Another blip in the data. This time to port. Ensign Knight once again expertly works the controls, avoiding a substantial burst of plasma that would have likely crippled the ship. She licks her lips, but that doesn't help. A damaged light flickers over head. Fire flickers to the left. The data read out flickers in front. All these flickering lights are making it hard to see exactly what the data is trying to say. Excalibur nears the edge of the nebula.

"I can to this." Knight repeats to herself.

There is one last blip of data. Its almost as if the nebula knows its about loose its prey. It lashes out wildly. A large pocket of plasma dead ahead is about light up the void. There is no steering around this one. All the panic returns to Ensign Knight as she desperately struggles to find a solution. She jerks the controls hard to port, but the plasma burst envelops the ship. The navigational controls explode in the ensign's face as the ship is again rocked by the blast. You hold tight to your chair to keep yourself from being thrown around too badly. You look over to see Ensign Knight on the floor flat on her back. Her face is badly burned and there is blood spurting from her neck.

"Cmdr Jenkins..." you start, but stop when you turn to see a large piece of shrapnel deep in your second-in-command's skull.

"Martinez!" you call out. "Are you still alive?"

You hear a faint cough and then, "Yeah, I'm still here."

"Take the helm."

"Aye si--"

Martinez never got the chance to take the helm because at that moment the Excalibur's hull breached flooding the ship with burning plasma and everyone was incinerated in an instant.

Back home the Excalibur has become a cautionary tale to stay away from the Dark Nebula.

Tell Ensign Knight to go with the medics and put Martinez at the helm?

You are worried about Ensign Knight. She is very young, and she is hurt. The flow of blood from the gash on her cheek shows no sign of slowing. You decide that she needs to see the medic right away.

"Ensign Knight," you call out. "Go with the medics; Martinez take the helm."

The injured girl gives you a confused look, but obeys. Martinez takes her position.

Thenalak quickly explains how to read the modified sensor data and warns that there will not be much time to react before the plasma ignites.

"I'll have to use thrusters only," says Martinez. "The inertial-compensators are still off line."

The fate of the entire crew of the Excalibur now lies in the hands of Jose Martinez. Beads of sweat roll down his brow as he tries to concentrate on the sensor read out. The data tells the tale, he sees a pocket of plasma off the starboard bow about to burst... his hands fly across the control panel adjusting course and speed. A damaged light flickers over head. Fire flickers to the left. The data read out flickers in front. All these flickering lights are making it hard to see exactly what the data is trying to say. But its not over yet. One last blip of data. Its almost as if the nebula knows its about loose its prey. It lashes out wildly. A large pocket of plasma dead ahead is about light up the void. There is no steering around this one. But Martinez is not about to falter when he's already come this far. He throttles back hard, causing everything on board to lurch forward. You end up on your ass four feet in front of the chair you had been sitting in. The ship shakes as the plasma ignites just ahead of the battered vessel. The monitor clears.

"This is it!" Martinez shouts as he guns the throttle hard. The ship speeds forward violently. Just as you were thrown forward before, you are now thrown back. You're momentarily stunned by the pain of whiplash, but you come to when you hear Cmdr Jenkins exclaim, "We're out!"

Excalibur burst through the gaseous skin of the immense beast, out into the wide openness of space.

Martinez lets out a sigh of relief as he lets his tense arms go limp. You are safe.

"No time to rest now Chief Engineer," You tease. "I need a damage report."

Martinez brings the ship to a stop a safe distance from the nebula and returns to his engineering station. He begins to assess the situation:

"We've burnt out the sensor array, auxiliary power is gone, main power is at 53%, the inertial-compensators are messed up pretty bad... I won't have them back online for at least a few days. Unfortunately since we can only use thrusters, it will take us 11 days to travel through the wormhole."

"Well," you sigh. "Go ahead and get that wormhole open. The sooner we get going the sooner we'll get home."

You press the com button to signal the infirmary.

"Doctor Russell on the line." the voice responds.

"What are our casualties Doctor?" you ask gravely.

"17 wounded, no dead thankfully. The prognosis is good for everyone here, they'll all heal up fine eventually."

You sigh in relief.

"wormhole is ready Captain." Martinez says.

"Lets go home."

The flashes in the void are captivating. Such a haunting beauty.

"Lets take a closer look Shall we? Ensign Knight, take us closer. Booster engines only." You command.

"Y-yes sir." the young ensign stammers. She works the controls stiffly trying not to make any mistakes. You can tell she is nervous.

"Just relax ensign, you're doing just fine." you reassure her.

Ensign Knight lets out a deep breath, looks up at you and smiles, "Thank you sir."

You are about to return the smile when you are blinded by an impossibly bright light and an ear shattering explosion. You are thrown from your seat as the Excalibur is jerked through space. The intense light disappears as the view screen shatters with a thunderous boom sending shards of glass all over the bridge.

You hear frightened shouts from your crew as you pick yourself up off the floor.

"Report!" Screams your First Mate Cmdr Jenkins.

"Its a plasma burst sir" Lieutenant Thenalak answers. "The ship has been struck by a pocket of igniting plasma."

"Ensign! Get us out of here! Full boosters! Now!" you bark the orders with a sense of urgency you've never heard in your own voice before.

"The controls are not responding sir" Ensign Knight sobs as she turns to answer you. Blood is pouring from a deep gash in her cheek.

"The inertial-compensators are offline." says Lieutenant Martinez.

At that moment, Excalibur is hit by another plasma burst. The crew is thrown about the bridge as control panels arc and catch fire. You look to see several crewmen laying on the deck. You push the com button for the infirmary.

"Medics to the bridge!" You order.

Another plasma burst, the ship is tossed once again.

"We can't take much more of this." warns Martinez.

"Thenalak, is there a way to predict where these pockets of plasma are going to burst?" you ask desperately.

Thenalak thinks for a moment. Its eerie how calm she remains. "Yes sir," she finally answers. "If we reroute auxiliary power to the sensor array, we can created an overload and ionize the inert gasses of the nebula. We can then track the flow of the ions we create. Where ever they flow, that’s where the next burst will be."

"Make it happen. Send the data to the helm controls."

Thenalak jumps to work. She moves with such speed and grace as she removes access panels from the walls and tears apart the tapestry of wires concealed behind the bulkheads only to reweave them into a new device.

"Done Captain!" she shouts.

A team of medics arrives on the bridge and start collecting the wounded. You look at the gash on Ensign Knight's cheek.

What do you do?

Now is the time to embark on your first mission as the captain of the Excalibur. You read the mission brief on your communications terminal. You brim with excitement. Your orders are to chart the Dark Nebula, a region of space known for its deadly plasma storms. You leave your office and set out for the ship's bridge. As you walk through the door an alert crewman yells, "Captain on the bridge!" All the officers and crew snap to attention. "At ease." You reply. The crew goes back to their work. You slowly make your way to the 'big chair' and sit down, taking a moment to savor the feeling of command. Cmdr. Jenkins smiles at you from his adjacent seat.

"What are your orders Captain?" he asks cheerfully.

"We are going to shed some light on the Dark Nebula" you respond coolly. "Ensign Knight, plot the course if you please."

The young woman swivels in her chair to face you, "Aye sir." she replies with all the vigor and discipline that comes from being fresh out of the space academy.

"Lieutenant Martinez, prepare the engines to generate a wormhole and stand by for coordinates." you tell the engineer.

"With pleasure sir." He says happily.

"Lieutenant Thenalak, what do you know of the Dark Nebula?" you ask.

The tall Hiroxian with the light purple skin and golden eyes turns from her science station and answers, "Very little. The plasma storms interfere with long range probes, and no ship has ever dared get close enough to examine it. Long range observation indicates that it has a radius of about 30 light years, charting it may take some time."

"Do you foresee any problems with charting it?"

"No sir, but I will be letting Ensign Patton take the lead on this mission, stellar cartography is his specialty."

"Very well." You are slightly annoyed, you had asked to have Thenalak reassigned, but Space Command insisted that her expertise was essential to your mission, and now here she is delegating the work to a subordinate. You're not sure you trust her. Humans and Hiroxi have had a rocky relationship at best. Centuries ago, the Hiroxi came to Earth in hopes of enslaving the Human race. Ever since they were driven out of human space, they have avoided contact with Earth. You wonder what Thenalak's motives are for leaving Hirox and joining the Space Command.

"Course plotted sir" Ensign Knight reports.

"Coordinates received and set. The engines are ready sir." Chief Engineer Martinez says proudly.

"Engage the engines lieutenant. Ensign, once the wormhole is stabilized you are free to take us in."

"Yes sir" both officers say in unison.

The wormhole forms a vortex on the star scape in front of the ship. Ensign Knight works the controls with trembling hands, its her first time piloting a space vessel through a wormhole. The Excalibur moves gracefully into the vortex and in a matter of minutes you emerge on the other side.

The Dark Nebula lies before you. You are used to seeing a sea of stars on the view screen, but now you see a nearly infinite darkness. In that darkness there are brilliant flashes like planet sized balls lightning.

What do you do?

You gaze through the porthole of your small shuttle craft at the magnificent vessel ahead; The ESV(Earth Space Vessel) Excalibur. She's brand new and she's yours, you've just been promoted to captain and been given your first command. The Excalibur's mission is to explore space for new resources for use back on earth and in her many colonies and to enforce the sovereignty of all Earth's holdings. Most of the officers assigned to you have scientific backgrounds as well as military training. You are excited to get started.

The shuttle docks with the Excalibur and you step onto your ship for the first time. You are greeted by your First Mate, Commander Calvin Jenkins and the Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Jose Martinez. You had spoken with Cmdr. Jenkins briefly before, you like him and are looking forward to serving with him. You shake both officers' hands and proceed to inspect the ship. Once the inspection is over you address the crew with some words that you hope sound motivational and tell them that you will be getting underway shortly.

You enter your office and take your seat behind the small desk. You log on to the communications terminal to receive your first mission...

If you have an idea for a story, you might like to try [[Idea Pitches|pitching your idea to other users]] and seeing how interested people might be in playing your story, what you could do to make playing your story fun, and who might be interested in collaborating with you to write it. Once you have done that, you can create it by entering your desired name for the Story into the search box and clicking '''Go'''. If the name has not already been taken, click this exact title to start the story. There are three general types of story. The first is the branching-plot story (an example of this is the Choose Your Own Adventure series of gamebooks), which require the reader to make choices but are otherwise like a regular novel. The second type is the role-playing game adventure, which combines the branching-plot novel with simple role-playing rules such as attack points and monster battles. The third type is the trivia quiz, where the player must answer questions as if they were on a game show.

You've never met a Hiroxian before, they are rumored to be very reclusive. You consider yourself to be open-minded when it comes to aliens, but you aren't happy about having Thenalak on board. She is the only nonhuman assigned to the Excalibur. Stories of Hiroxians make you uneasy. You've heard that Hiroxian culture is brutal; full of bloodshed and violence. You push the com button and ask Lieutenant Thenalak to come to your office.

"I'm on my way" she answers.

A few minutes later your door chimes.

"Come in" you say.

The door opens and Thenelak walks in. She has long blue hair that she keeps in a braid. For the most part her skin is very light purple, almost white, but there are darker areas around the side of her head that go down her neck. It looks like she is wearing heavy purple eye shadow, but that is just natural pigmentation for her. The eyes themselves look human, but the iris is golden. She has no eyebrows. You notice how human her nose looks. Her lips are dark purple, nearly black, and her teeth are all pointed. The only other part of her that isn't covered by here uniform are her hands, which are frightening. She has five fingers and on each one there is a 3 inch claw. She could probably slash a person to death with little effort. You can imagine her being the monster a child imagines is hiding under his bed, but she is still attractive in a strange way.

"Lieutenant Thenalak reporting as ordered sir" she says.

"Have a seat" you say.

She sits down in the chair on the other side of your desk.

"I'd like to know more about you Lieutenant." you begin. "I don't know much about Hiroxians..."

"Hiroxi" she interrupts.

"I beg your pardon?"

"You said 'Hiroxians,' the plural form of Hiroxian is Hiroxi."

"Oh, I see. Tell me more about the Hiroxi."

"Can you be more specific sir?"

"Where are you from? Tell me about your home."

"I come from River City in the Yamira Province of Hirox."

"Why did you leave Hirox?"

"It's a personal matter, I'd rather not discuss it sir."

You're beginning to become annoyed. You can tell that she isn't going to give you much information, but you continue anyways.

"Very well. Oh, I read in you're personnel file that you are 44 years old, is that right?"

"I believe so sir, at least by Earth's calendar. A year on Hirox lasts longer than a year on Earth, it has been a while since I sat down and did the math to figure out my age."

"Well, you certainly don't look 44" you say trying to sound friendly.

"Thank you sir, I'm actually young for a Hiroxian."

"Oh really? What's the average life expectancy for Hiroxians, I mean Hiroxi." You're finally getting somewhere with her.

"The average Hiroxian lifespan is 180 Earth years I believe, however I've been told some of my ancestors lived to be 200."

"Wow, I'd like to know more about your people, other than a long life span, do the you have any other strange characteristics?"

"Strange? Well, I guess there are a few things about me that are different, but they are normal for me."

"Of course, sorry, but please continue."

"For one thing, I can breathe under water."

"Really? That's amazing. So are you an amphibian? You have hair so that would suggest you're a mammal..."

"I am a pseudo-mammal. Not quite mammal, but not quite amphibian either."

"I see. What else?"

"I have a series of organs in both my forearms which allow me to produce electricity, much like the electric eel of your world, but they can produce more electricity than I can."

"That's... frightening." you say.

"There is one more thing," she continues. "I have low level psychic ability."

"Psychic? Explain."

"I can read minds under certain conditions, I'm also susceptible to picking up the psychic energy of higher level psychic beings."

"Can you read my mind?" You are becoming concerned. You don't like the idea of anyone invading you mind. You also don't want Thenalak to know exactly what you think of her.

"I'd rather not," she replies. "The act of mind reading requires a great deal of effort and would be rather unpleasant for both of us."

You are somewhat relieved. "You mean I would be able to tell if you were trying to read my mind?"

"Most certainly, I'd have make physical contact with you and you would be able to 'sense' me in your mind."

"Well, this all very interesting and I'd love to talk to you more sometime, but now I'd better let you get back do your duties."

"Thank you sir, I look forward to serving under you." She stands up and leaves your office. You feel somewhat better about her now that you've gotten to know her a little better, but you're still not sure.

You've never liked going to the doctor, but you respect their dedication. You press the com button and ask Dr. Russell to come to your office.

"Right away sir" she replies.

Moments later the door chimes.

"Enter" you call out.

Dr. Russell comes through the door and gracefully approaches your desk. She's a tall woman with long brown hair and stunning blue eye. You can't help but notice her beauty and elegance.

"You wanted to see me sir?" she asks.

"Yes," you answer. "Please, have a seat."

"Thank you" she says as she lowers herself into the chair on the opposite side of your desk.

"Is that a British accent?"

"It is, I'm from Manchester."

"Ah, very good. I asked you in here because I want to get to know my officers before we set off on our mission."

"A wise decision sir."

"Your file says you joined Space Command nine years ago. With four years at the academy, that means you've been practicing medicine for five years now?"

"Yes sir, that's correct."

"Please don't take this the wrong way, but five years of medicine seems awfully short for the chief physician of a space vessel."

"No, you're right. Normally five years wouldn't be enough to earn this position, but I assure you my medical prowess is up to the challenge."

"Oh? What makes you think so?"

"Two years ago, while I was serving on Space Station 14, there was an outbreak of the Sagittarius Virus..."

"The Sagittarius Virus? That's lethal isn't it?"

"Chances of survival are typically 4%."

"And there's no treatment, right?"

"Wrong" she smiles. "There was no treatment until two years ago."

"You found a cure?" you say in amazement.

"Yes I did, before the virus could claim even a single life."

"Well doctor, I am impressed and I feel that this ship's health is in good hands."

"Thank you captain."

"And do you think you'll be able to treat any aliens we may encounter?"

"I have to admit, I've never treated anything other than humans, but I believe I'm up to it. I find alien physiology fascinating. I've already started studying Lieutenant Thenalak... she's incredible."

Lieutenant Thenalak is the only alien aboard Excalibur.

"Yes, I imagine she is. Well doctor, I won't keep you from your studies any longer. Thank you for your time."

"It's my pleasure" she says as she rises from her seat. "Good day to you sir."

You watch as she leaves and think to yourself, "If I ever pick up an alien germ, I'll be glad to have her around."

"Ah, well, lets see," Jenkins says. "I'm from Atlanta, I graduated from the Space Academy in 2392 where I studied anthropology. I was a shuttle pilot for 4 years on Titan Station. After that I served aboard the ESV Ulysses."

"Yes, I've spoken to the captain of the Ulysses. He spoke very highly of you. Tell me, how do you view your role as my first mate?"

"The way I see it, I'm you're right hand man. You tell me something needs doing and I make sure it gets done."

"Good, I appreciate the support, but I'd like you're input whenever you think I've overlooked something. I don't need a 'yes man.'"

"Oh you may come to regret that sir" he laughs.

"Well I'm looking forward to serving with you Commander."

You gaze through the porthole of your small shuttle craft at the magnificent vessel ahead; The ESV(Earth Space Vessel) Excalibur. She's brand new and she's yours, you've just been promoted to captain and been given your first command. The Excalibur's mission is to explore space for new resources for use back on earth and in her many colonies and to enforce the sovereignty of all Earth's holdings. Most of the officers assigned to you have scientific backgrounds as well as military training. You are excited to get started.

The shuttle docks with the Excalibur and you step onto your ship for the first time. You are greeted by your First Mate, Commander Calvin Jenkins and the Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Jose Martinez. You had spoken with Cmdr. Jenkins briefly before, you like him and are looking forward to serving with him. You shake both officers' hands and proceed to inspect the ship. Once the inspection is over you address the crew with some words that you hope sound motivational and tell them that you will be getting underway shortly.
