As I'm driving I nearly hit a Himalayan cat and I frantically skid to a stop. Not a second passes before a teenaged girl runs out in front of my car screaming, "Sorry!"

I roll down my window,
"Is she okay? Are you okay? What is she doing out in the middle of the street?"

The girl ushers me to park and then comes right up to my window. Her hair is tied back in a loose ponytail with a visor. She is wearing a blue polo T-shirt with a tiny cartoon cat on the front pocket. She is short of breath as she speaks, "Like I said, I am so sorry. I actually work at this pet store that you are parked in front of and I was supposed to be giving one of the Labradors a bath, but Yoyo, the cat, escaped and I was just trying to catch her before my manager came back and noticed that I had messed up again. I'm really sorry ma'am."

I nod my head and assure her that everything is fine and that she should take a deep breath.
"So you work at this pet store, huh?" I say, "You guys hiring?"

The girl smiles and takes a deep breath, "Actually, we are. We are down now to only four workers, and so we are desperate to find others to fill up some of the shifts. I swear, my entire teenage life is this job! It's not all too bad though. I mean, I love animals. We don't just hire anyone though, you have to be committed to the animals. Our most important task is to make sure that all of the animals are taken care of to the upmost standards before they find good homes."

"I'm definitely interested. I've had animals my whole life growing up. How soon do you think I could get an interview? I'm in desperate need for a job." I suddenly regret that last part, unsure if it didn't make me seem as "committed to the animals" as she expected.

Thankfully, she didn't seem to notice. "My manage Chris should be back in about fifteen minutes. We aren't busy today; I'm sure he would be willing to give you an interview."

I decide to not make any more progress for today. I flop myself down on my futon and start scrolling the TV guide. The hotel offers all of its guests Y-Verse cable, which has thousands of channels. I've never seen so many channels in my lifetime. When I was a little girl, we only had basic cable and Saturday morning cartoons which were the best.
I hadn't realized that I had actually fallen asleep until a loud thump woke me up. Suddenly I heard screaming that seemed to be coming from an older woman right outside my room. I looked out my peephole to see an older woman trying to get away from a younger man who was pushing her up against my door.

I banged on the door and yelled, "Stop!"
The man seem to have backed off and I swung the door open. The older woman practically fell into my arms. She was so small, with wispy graying hair. He, on the other hand, was very tall, skinny, and broad shouldered.

I gasped in horror as he pulled out a gun and aimed in at my face, "You should've stayed inside your little room, bitch. You shouldn't interfere with the real world."

I hear a faint yelp escape my throat, a very loud bang, and then silence.
I consider the option and decide to drive around for a bit and think it through. The starting pay isn't too shabby, however I do wonder, just what kind of work would they expect me to do. The sign stated "show a little skin", Just how much is a little?

"How long do you plan on staying, Rayne?"

I look Sylvia, the head of the hotel management, directly in the eye. Inside my stomach churns I hate lying, but it comes so naturally; it's as if every lie that I've ever told, some part of me believes it to be true.

Easily I say, "Only for a few months. Three or four at the most. I just need some time to get back up on my feet." I smile.

My insides feel grotesque. Fearing the excuses I will have to make when she begins to suspect that I don't actually plan on leaving so soon, a suspicion that proves true. I'm running away. I'm running away from my parents who have always expected more out of their academically gifted daughter. I'm running away from my 17 year old sister, Rosalie, who thinks I need to better evaluate my decisions before I make them. What does she know? She's seventeen! I'm running away from the drugs that have caused me to lose almost sixty pounds this past year, at least I think I am. And lastly, I'm running away from Trent, my abusive ex-boyfriend of six years who first introduced me to the wonderful world of crystal meth.

Sylvia interrupts my thoughts, "So the rent for this room is $350/month. It has a full running bathroom and kitchen. The living room is your bedroom, much like a studio apartment. The space is small, sure, but you won't find another room in this hotel much bigger than this for less than $750. And as we discussed before, that in not in your price range."" Sylvia smiles defiantly and then leaves the room with a final,"Good luck and happy living!"

I gaze around my new apartment. My surprisingly comfortable futon sits in one corner with a small television set and radio in front of it. The kitchen is small, but efficient. The bathroom has no tub, only a shower. I can't complain, at the age of 23, I finally have a place to call my own.

I consider what to do next.

Do you:

I decide to not make any more progress for today. I flop myself down on my futon and start scrolling the TV guide. The hotel offers all of its guests Y-Verse cable, which has thousands of channels. I've never seen so many channels in my lifetime. When I was a little girl, we only had basic cable and Saturday morning cartoons which were the best.

. . .

I'm the head owner of this here dealership. I'd shake your hand in aquaintance, honey, but you don't want to touch these greasey fingers." He chuckles.

Do you:
*Go out and buy yourself transportation
*Get a job
*Stay home and watch television
