You are in Pallet Town.

In town you can find your house, your rival Blue's house,Which you can visit, and the Oak Pokemon Research Lab.

There is also a little girl reading a sign in front of your house, you have the option of Walking up to her.

To the north is Route 1, and to the south is the watery Route 21, but you can't go to either until you've picked up a Pokemon at The Oak Pokemon Research Lab.
