You take a deep breath, trying to steady the flutter in your stomach. The scent of Rod’s aftershave, the tightness of the office, the confident presence of both men—it presses down on you in a way you can’t shake.
“I—I don’t think I can do this,” you say, voice firmer than you feel. Kevin glances at you, surprised.
Mike steps closer, his grin widening but eyes sharp. “Hey, come on—there’s nothing to worry about. It’s just a quick shoot. Test shots, warm-up. You’ll be done in no time.”
Rod leans forward slightly, his dark eyes twinkling with practiced charm. “Really, it’s simple. You just stand there, we take some shots, and that’s it. You’ll see—it’s fun.”
Kevin shifts, looking between you and them. You notice the spark of interest in his eyes. He’s clearly ready to follow them down the hall. “Sounds fine to me,” he mutters quietly, leaning forward as if he’s already imagining the shoot.
But you shake your head, a knot tightening in your chest. “I don’t know… something doesn’t feel right. I think I need to pass.”
Mike’s smile doesn’t falter, but there’s a subtle tilt to his head, like he’s trying to read you. “You’re nervous, that’s all. Totally normal. But trust me—you’ll be fine. We’re professionals. Nothing weird, I promise.”
Rod chimes in smoothly, reaching for the small camera piece he had tucked in his bag. “It’s just a couple of shots. No one’s rushing, and you’ll be in good hands. You might even enjoy it once you start.”
Kevin glances at you again, hesitating. You can tell he’s tempted. His shoulders are relaxed, his curiosity obvious. “Yeah… we could just do it, see what it’s like,” he says quietly.
You shake your head again, this time more firmly. “I can’t. I just… I have a bad feeling about this. I’m leaving.”
Kevin frowns, torn. He takes a step closer to the hallway, then back toward you. “Alright… if you’re sure.” He runs a hand through his hair, a small sigh escaping. “I guess I’m coming with you.”
Mike chuckles softly, almost indulgently. “Really? You’re walking away now? You’ll regret missing this one, I promise.”
Rod smiles, though there’s a faint disappointment in his eyes. “We just want you both to feel comfortable,” he says. “But if you’re not ready… that’s your choice.”
You push past them carefully, Kevin following reluctantly. The hallway stretches ahead, and you move quickly, the fluorescent lights above now feeling oppressive rather than neutral.
Outside, the sunlight hits like a relief. You exhale deeply, letting the tension drain slightly. Kevin pauses, turning to you with a tight-lipped grin. “Probably for the best,” he says. But his voice carries a note of uncertainty, a trace of curiosity he hasn’t fully shaken. “Still… part of me wants to see what that would’ve been like.”
You nod quietly, feeling the same flicker of curiosity, but the tight knot in your chest confirms you made the right call. Together, you start down the street, leaving the office—and Mike and Rod—behind. The pull of the studio, the equipment, the idea of the shoot… it fades with every step, replaced by the quiet reassurance of following your instincts.
