You don't think you could ever get a shot on hitting on Leaf when you defeat her. Instead, you decide to let her win. You commanded your Pokémon to play defensive and not offensive, resulting in you losing.
Leaf: Yay I won! I don't get it Red, did you let me win on purpose? That seemed way too easy.
Shit, she caught you!
Leaf: Ah well, I prefer you fight back instead of considering me some pawn. I want to learn from battles too you know..
It seems like you made the wrong choice. But who knows, maybe she forgets this ever happened and so you have another shot next time you meet her?
