So maybe that's one option - he lures a girl away to show his amazing feat of escape, only to end up dead (and thus heaven/hell/purgatory)...possibly because the child innocently sabotages the trick.

Either to lure the girl away to "see more tricks" (similar plot to the kidnap option) or else to get her knocked out (e.g., he magically produces lollipops laced with knockout drops).
