"Do you know who I am?" you ask, lowering your voice just enough to add weight to your words. "I’m Analland’s great hero."

The girl’s brows knit together. She shifts uncomfortably, wringing her hands against her tunic. "I know that. But I have to earn for my family today, whatever happens to the Codpiece."

You lean in slightly, just enough to see the way her breath catches, her lips parting in surprise. "Then your family will starve today and burn tomorrow," you tell her, the words smooth, measured, meant to test her resolve.

She swallows, glancing at the Sightmistress behind you as if searching for help. But the Sergeant of the Sightmasters does not intervene. Slowly, her eyes return to yours, unwilling to yield so easily.

"Maybe," she says at last, her voice quiet but firm. "But if the hero of Analland is such a great man, perhaps he’ll show kindness to a girl who asks for no charity – only a fair price."
