“But you love Derek. Everyone has second thoughts,” Tessa said. “Don’t throw away your chance to marry Derek because you’re afraid.”

“But what if he turns out like his father?” Ashley sighed. “He’s awful!”

“He won’t because you’ll be with him. You can help him be his own man.”

Tessa didn’t know Derek’s father, but she knew Ashley--if anyone could keep Derek from turning into a jerk, it was his future wife. “You’re right,” Ashley finally admitted, “I don’t know what came over me.”
“It’s your wedding day,” Tessa smiled, “it’s okay to be emotional.”

Ashley sniffed. “Thanks, Tessa. I really wish you were my maid of honor. Derek wanted his sister Maddy to be and I stupidly went along with it. She’s useless. You... you always know what to say.”

At first, Tessa wasn’t sure what to reply--but then she realized she should say:
