Use the shadows as a compass

Surely you can use the shadows of the grass blades as a compass. Looking through the grass to where it seems lightest, you head the other way, hoping to move northwards. The ground below rises and falls, as if you walked over low foothills, but there is nothing to see.
You keep following the darkest area of the grass that you can find for about an hour or more. Then suddenly, you come across a flattened path through the grass stems. Someone else has walked this way!
