You wait for him to reach you which he does, panting. He is in terrible shape.
"Halt!" he declares again. "This is my bridge, and to cross, you must pay the toll!"
"For what?" You look over the aged guy-ropes, the warped boards. "What is there to pay for?"
"Do you think these bridges build themselves? Do you think it's easy living out here, an outcast from Krustipanti, trying to feed my children? When barely anyone takes these paths anyway?" The man is nothing better than a beggar. "The toll is just one gold piece," he says. "It's very reasonable."
