You ready your weapon.

Kill her, a voice in your head tells you. Kill her now!

But I shouldn't... you argue.

The druidess stares at you, eyes pleading.

Do it.

You raise your already bloody sword, and penetrate her leaf-top, pushing through to her heart. She opens her mouth to scream, and instead regurgitates blood onto you. You withdraw your blade - now completely red - and she falls to the ground, dead. The snow around her body reddens.

You feel a sharp pang in your left hand, and you look down at the staff's handle. Your hand is purple and veiny where it touches the handle, and the discolourment quickly spreads. You recall reading about this. Magic-users who place all of their power in a single item - rare but still possible among druids - sometimes protect their weapon with a trap-spell. The spell is fatal, and triggers when someone other than the owner uses it.

That knowledge isn't going to be useful in this situation, but at least you'll know how you met your fate.
