Respectfully ask what she means by a 'girl like you'(Abb1-19)

"...A girl like me? I'm not sure what you mean," you respond with uncertainty. "I do work after school, and on weekends too, but I can promise you I have just enough free time to take film seriously. And anyway, I need more extracurriculars for my resume. I was hoping to get a scholarship when I apply to college."

Mrs. Crage appears to be irritated, but that might just be her permanent expression. "Well...I...simply meant that from a financial standpoint...nevermind. If you insist, you may stay, of course. But I will only be submitting films of a high artistic quality to the film festival. If you cannot complete the assigned projects to my satisfaction, you will simply have to deal with the consequences."

"Okay." You look at her earnestly. She frowns,

What do you say?
Nothing, let him wander off(Abb1-18)

TheSugarTrail:

"Um...speaking of the projector, I think they need some help with it..." Blaine walks off to join some other students.

"Alice!" This time, it's your friend, Emma, waving to you from across the room. You walk over and sit down next to her. "I saw your name on the list and thought I'd sign up too," she says excitedly. "This is actually really cool, and we haven't even done anything yet. I just wish the club wasn't run by-"

"Everyone, please sit!" The classroom door creaks open and slams shut. "For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mrs. Crage. Now I realize that this is ''your'' club, not mine, but because I want you all to succeed, I have high expectations for members of this club. The film festival is coming up quickly, and this is their first year accepting high school students."

You haven't heard a thing she said- you're too horrified to see her. Ms. Crage nearly had you suspended for a week last year. She had lost your two biggest papers and insisted that you never handed them in, and when you refused to accept a zero on your work and continued to ask about it during class, she went to the principal and claimed that you were harassing her. Not a day later, she found your missing papers in her filing cabinet- and then she marked down your grade because she had received it "late." Eventually you did receive your fair grade, but Ms. Crage has always seemed to have it out for you after all of the trouble.

"-and you will be learning those skills as well. We will meet again in two days. Dismissed!" Everyone files out of the room, but Ms. Crage steps in front of you. "Alice. I'm surprised to see you here- I wouldn't think that you have time for after-school activities."

"Why?" You are caught off guard.

"Oh, after all of those issues last year, I thought I would check with guidance to see if there were other reasons for your behavior. So your brother takes care of you? And I heard that he'd had some trouble paying for field trips and the like. Is this really the right setting for a girl like you? You might want to focus on working after school. Film club requires a serious commitment."

"Whoever turned down your idea is insane. That does sound awesome. We don't really need the projector for every meeting, do we?"

The following day after school, you attend the first meeting of film club. Your eyes light up as you enter the room- film equipment is set up in each corner of the room, props from the drama department are scattered across desks, and the large projector at the front of the room is displaying looped footage of a silent carnival, the colors fading in and out and giving the activity of the carnival a serene quality.

"Hey, Alice! You're new to this, right?" Blaine McCoy is on your right, smiling with a mouth full of braces. Blaine was a nice kid, if a little bit awkward, and very involved in the arts. He was also a snappy dresser, which did little to make up for the braces, 70s glasses and bad haircut.

"Sort of. I've worked on filming and video editing before, but this is my first time in the club," you reply.

"Yeah, sorry if the room is sort of...small and dark. I had asked about having meetings outside- there's this little hill past the trees in back of the school, and it's basically this big patch of grass, completely surrounded by flowers. It's beautiful. I thought it'd be good inspiration for videos, but the idea was shot down because we can't set the projector up out there. If you want, maybe you and I could go up there sometime together, even just to sit around when it's sunny out..." He pauses suddenly, as if realizing he has said something wrong. "I don't mean, together, um, alone- I don't mean...just if you wanted to check it out as a film spot or something." He is avoiding eye contact.

"Alice!" This time, it's your friend, Emma, waving to you from across the room. You walk over and sit down next to her. "I saw your name on the list and thought I'd sign up too," she says excitedly. "This is actually really cool, and we haven't even done anything yet. "Everyone, please sit!" The classroom door creaks open and slams shut. "For those of you who don't know me, my name is Mrs. Crage. Now I realize that this is your club, but because I want you all to suceed, I have high expectations for members of this club. The film festival is coming up quickly, and this is their first year accepting high school students."

You haven't heard a thing she said- you're too horrified to see her. Ms. Crage nearly had you suspended for a week last year. She had lost your two biggest papers and insisted that you had never handed them in, and when you refused to accept a zero on your work and continued to ask about it during class, she went to the principal and claimed that you were harassing her.

He was a snappy dresser, which did little to make up for the braces, 70s glasses and bad haircut.

"Alex...is there anything I can do to help you get this promotion?" You sit down next to him.

He shakes his head. "You don't need to do anything, Ali. I just need to try to get Harry to give me a little more time to pay him back, or find a way to pay him within the week. I could work overtime some more, maybe sell some stuff..." He puts his arm around you and hugs you. "We'll be fine. I'll figure it out."

"So Harry's the man with the sunglasses? You don't need to worry about these things all by yourself, you know," you comment. "I have a job too, I can help."

Alex thinks for a moment. "Well, if you could make a little extra money at work...every bit helps in paying Harry back. But I don't want you to stress out about it."

You smile at him. "No problem."

You quickly pull up in front of your house. Alex and the man look over as you step up to the doorway, concern in your bright eyes. "Excuse me, I- "

"Who are you?" the man interrupts.

"This is my sister, Alice," Alex replies, looking sternly at the man.

Before the man has time to interrupt again, you make your case. "I overheard what you were saying. Look, Alex has been working for seven years to give me a normal life when he should have been going off the college, and hanging with his friends and forming his own future. He gave that up so that I wouldn't end up in some sort of foster home. We could really use that promotion, not for frivolties, just food and electricity, and I ''know'' Alex will pay you back, he doesn't steal or let other people pay for our needs."

The sincerity in your voice seems to strike the man. He takes off his sunglasses. "So...this is your sister." He glances at Alex, then looks back it you with interest. "You have a lot of faith in your brother. We'll just have to see if he deserves it."

"He does."

"Come on, Alice. Let's go inside." You follow Alex through the door, closing it behind you as the man turns to leave. "Thanks for that," Alex smiles, settling down on a worn floral couch.

TheSugarTrail:

You take a quick look into the rearview mirror, fix up your blonde hair and roll down your window. You slowly drive up in front of your house

"Excuse me!" You call pleasantly to Alex and the man, who both turn with an expression of confusion. "I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. When you said Tom, did you mean Tom Segel? Owner of that lovely local magazine of ours?"

"Um, yes. Why?" The man in the sunglasses looks suspiciously at you.

"Allow me to introduce myself," you call through the window. "I'm Tom's niece, Jenny. And I have to say, I don't think my uncle would be very impressed to hear that one of his employees is out and about harassing and threatening other employees! What did you say your name was?"

The man in the sunglasses grows pale. "Oh- ah- no, I think you misheard. And I was just leaving- "

"Oh, really? I distinctly recall hearing something about you sabotaging this man's potential for a promotion. Really, sir, I'd like to get your name." Alex is clearly stifling a grin.

The man is already backing down the street. "It's very nice to meet you, I, ah, really have to go! Um, tell your uncle hello for me!" He gets into his car and pulls away before you can ask anything else.

Alex is grinning as you park and enter the house. "That was amazing," he laughs, settling down on a worn floral couch. "I really do have to pay him back at some point, though," he adds more seriously.

What do you do?
*[[Ask what you can do to help him get the promotion (Abb1-7)]]
The choir group (Abb1)

TheSugarTrail:

The choir group sounds perfect. Your mother taught you to sing when you were just a little girl- those are your fondest memories of her. You reminisce as you drive home in the baby blue Ford you fixed up yourself.

Your thoughts are interrupted as you pull up to the little yellow house you share with your older brother, Alex. The two of you work hard to keep this house in shape, having already lost the home in which you once lived with your parents.

As you pull up to the house, you see a dark car parked out front. Alex is standing in the doorway, his blonde hair mussed up like it always is after work, talking to an angry-looking man in sunglasses. Rolling down your window as you cruise down the street, you can hear the tail end of of their conversation.
"I've been working overtime for three weeks straight. Once I get the promotion, I can pay you back." Alex looks stressed.

"You're assuming you actually ''get'' the promotion. Tom knows you're desperate, but that doesn't mean he's going to give you any special treatment." Tom is Alex's boss. "I loaned you thousands of dollars and it's been months. Do you think I'm an idiot? That wasn't free money, and I want it repaid in full within the week!"

"Wait, I- "

"I don't care about your excuses! One week, or I'm letting Tom know all about your unpaid loans, and you can kiss that promotion goodbye!"

What do you do?
