She's pleased with that. "Just what I was going for. Glad it worked."

The two of you continue chatting, each trying to scratch the surface of the other's life. You tell her about your family, your trials and tribulations in high school, and your battle through college. Jay orders more shots over the course of the conversation, and the more she drinks, the more she opens up to you.

She tells tales of her own younger life, and the backlash she faced when she came out from those she thought were her friends. How her current job is rough on her, and now she's turned to this bar on Fridays to ease a bit of her stress and loneliness. She mentions meeting Layla somewhere down the line, but her memories blend into each other as you get caught up in her voice. It's so smooth and womanly, yet low and calming. The kind of voice that makes you wish she would put her arms around you.

By the end of it, you've lost track of the stories and she's lost track of the shots. Glancing down at the table, you see what are surely far too many empty glasses.

"Jay," you whisper, tugging her jacket. "I think you've had enough."

"Yeah..." she sighs, a self-defeating laugh escaping her throat. "Prolly have."

She tries to stand and sways back and forth on shaky legs. "Careful!" you say, hastily sliding off your stool and grabbing her arm for support. "I'm so sorry, I should've stopped you before this happened." She's leaning on you pretty hard, and you're thankful she's not very heavy.

"Nah... 'S always happens... I get t'tellin' stories an'I lose count."

"Is everything all right over there?"

Layla's shouting from behind the counter. You shake your head. "She drank too much."

The bartender winces. "Better get her to the bathroom, then. Know where it is?"

You hadn't thought to look when you came in. You don't want to embarrass yourself again, but Jay's getting worse.

The blonde waves her hand dismissively. “Nothin’, your choice how you go about things. Interesting trick, though. Wouldn’t have thought of it myself.” Her gaze lands on you, making your cheeks burn. “I came in here to see how you were doing, but you look pretty good to me.”

Rather than leaving, she lingers for a few more endless seconds, those jade eyes teasing yours. Her lips turn up into a mischievous grin that sends your heart spiraling.

“On that note, I have some free time right now. Got a friend to cover for me at the bar.” She leans forward ever so slightly into the stall, close enough for a bit of her Angel perfume to waft toward you. “So, that said… mind if I stay for a bit?”

You can’t see Jay’s face, but you can feel the tenseness in her fingers poised over your head.

The magic number: 21. You’re finally the right age. After floundering through high school and a bit of college with your unaccepting family and clueless friends, after hearing for the millionth time, “but you don’t look like a lesbian”, you’ve made your way here on a Friday night. And damn it, you’re gonna have fun.

A small neon sign decorates the entrance, the name of the bar flashing in bright crimson and yellow. The hem of your red dress, which reaches around your mid-thigh, flaps in the warm wind as you walk briskly. You hope you aren’t dressed too formally. You just wanted to look pretty. Before now, there’s never been a point in looking pretty for anyone you might like. It’s not like girls tape signs on themselves, “Hey, I’m gay too!”.

You chuckle at the thought and summon up your courage. You’ve nearly reached the front of the line to get in. Two bouncers stand by the door, one male and one, surprisingly, female. She’s got close-cropped blonde hair and striking blue eyes. Beneath her loose-fitting army jacket is a white tank top that clings to her modest figure. A pair of cargo pants and old boots completes her strong, reliable look.

When you step to the front of the line, she smiles kindly. “ID?”

You hand it to her along with some cash, your hand trembling. She takes it for a moment, her fingers brushing yours. A bit rough, but gentle. You blush.

“Here you go,” she says smoothly, handing it back. “Enjoy.”

“I will,” you say earnestly. “It’s my first time.”

She raises an eyebrow. You blink and wave your hands. “Not like that, I mean…!”

You nod stiffly, face flushed. God, you say the stupidest things when you’re nervous. Still, it’s almost worth it to have her hand on you.

The way her face lights up is cute in direct contrast with her sexy smile. “Then I guess we’d better get over there.”

She has a bit of trouble getting out of the stall, but she makes due with less of your support than before. You start to wonder if maybe she was leaning against you so much on purpose.

Right as you exit the bathroom, you see Layla about to enter.

“Hey,” she says, looking over Jay. “I was coming in to check on you, but you look a lot better now.” She grins knowingly. “Guess you got a little pick-me-up.”

“Maybe.” The woman shrugs and waves at the bartender, seeming to say ‘better luck next time’. “We’re headin’ down to the basement.”

Layla spins on her heel with a long, drawn out sigh. “Even I know when I’ve lost.” She smiles at you over her shoulder. “But you’d better come back, y’hear?”

You catch a bit more of her true accent. “I will!”

“Good.” She moves into the wave of the crowd. “’Cause next time, I get to treat you.”

Her parting words send a shiver down your spine. Jay silently curses her old rival and squeezes your hand. “Let’s go.”

The two of you make your way across the room through the crowds of chatting and dancing women, which seem to have thickened with nightfall. The pounding of your heart reverberates throughout your body. You spot the stairway to the basement and head for it. The sign hanging beside it welcomes you as you begin your descent.

Jay slips on a few steps. “Careful,” you whisper, afraid to make any loud noise. Entering the basement feels like entering another world. In a sense, that’s what you’re doing.

Night spreads all around you until you’re surrounded by near darkness at the very bottom of the stairs. You start hearing others, their small sounds of pleasure floating on the warm air. As your vision adjusts, the furniture comes into view.

“There’s an empty one,” Jay says, pointing to a couch not far from the entrance. “Kinda surprising.”

You nod at no one and squeeze her arm tight. Nothing could have prepared you for what you’re about to do. It’s scary, but you want it so much. The desire that’s been accumulating all night is desperate for release.

“C’mon,” she says, taking your hand and lowering you toward the couch. Warm cushions collapse beneath your body as you land. You feel helpless in the dark with your body exposed, waiting for her to take you.

Jay stands in front of the couch, the outline of her body strong and sure against the backdrop of night. She shrugs off her biker jacket and undoes her belt. Both fall to the floor, the clank of the buckle muffled by the leather.

She chuckles and crawls onto the couch. A second later she’s on top of you, shielding you from the world. All you know are those fiery eyes that look over you protectively, and the intent lying behind them. You blush darkly as she takes your face into her calloused hands.

“You’re adorable, ‘yknow that?”

She kisses you harder this time, pushing your head back into the cushion. Every bit of her is sliding over you slowly, like a river of fire. Her lips caress yours tenderly, and your body submits itself. This already feels amazing.

“It’s not about rules.” Reaching up, you lift her hand away from your head and bring it back to her side. “It’s about me not being comfortable with this. Okay?”

Jay says nothing for a few moments, just gazes into you sadly. Your heart starts to break for her.

Her legs wilt out from under her, and she sits down on the toilet. Her garnet eyes are clouded with hurt and confusion.

“I’m sorry,” she whispers, holding her head in her hands. “I thought you’d be okay with it, I shouldn’t have assumed…” She drags the sleeve of her jacket over her eyes. “I don’t usually feel like this about people I just met. But you were so nice to me. Hell, you listened to me. No one ever does that.”

You feel terrible. Not for voicing how you felt, but for this woman’s pain. From her confidence in approaching you and talking to Layla, it hadn’t occurred to you that she might be very lonely.

“Now here’s a girl after my own heart.” She puts her hand to her chin. “Let’s see… All right, let’s try that.”

Without giving any indication of what exactly you’ll be trying, she turns and gets going with a few bottles and a shaker. You tap your fingers on the counter, eagerly awaiting whatever exotic concoction she’s decided to make.

“Don’t think I’ve seen you here before.”

Craning your neck, you see a woman in a biker jacket standing behind you. Her loose t-shirt and jeans hide it, but you can tell just from the curves of her shoulders that she’s got a powerful build.

“You haven’t,” you reply, turning in your seat and leaning your elbow on the counter so you can face her. “This is my first time here. Or in any bar.”

“You’re doin’ pretty well for a first time,” She takes the seat next to yours. “You even knew how to order.”

“Uh, well…” you glance back at the bartender, who works quickly and efficiently. “Actually, I let the bartender decide for me.”

The woman’s fiery brown eyes widen. “You let Layla pick your drink?”

Wow, those eyes are intense. Just looking into them makes your stomach do backflips. “What’s wrong with that?”

She folds her arms, the leather of her jacket rubbing together. “Nah, nothin’ wrong with it. Just, uh…”

Bending over in her seat, she whispers. “She’s kind of a horndog. Especially when it comes to younger women.”

Her warm breath prickles your ear, and your face gets hot. “Oh. Well, thanks for warning me.”

Layla returns right then with your drink, setting it down neatly in front of you. “Enjoy. It’s sweet, don’t worry. Kind of like lemonade.”

Your new companion smirks. “Lemonade with vodka. You tryin’a get her smashed?”

“She said she wanted to get drunk,” Layla counters, hands on her hips. “The customer is always right. And as for you, Jay…” She places another shot on the counter. “Don’t you get too handsy yourself.”

The bartender leaves to attend to other customers. Your companion laughs. “That woman, I swear. She’s got eyes and ears in the back of her head. Heard everything we said. Or guessed.”

You stare down at your shot; pale yellow liquid in a frosted shot glass, garnished with a small slice of lemon. It really does look just like lemonade.

Beside you, the woman scoops up her own glass, layered with yellow on the bottom and brown on top. You aren’t sure what it could be, but the layered effect is appealing. These shots are like little works of art.

She grins. “You ready? Just knock it back.”

Nodding, you pick up your own glass. She counts it down by bobbing her head, and you go for it. The sweetness and tartness of the drink spreads across your tongue, the vodka leaving a bit of fire in its wake.

“Ah…” the biker woman lowers her shot glass and grins. “I’ll never get enough’a those.” She points to your empty glass. “How was it?”

“Good,” you answer, mouth and brain still reeling from the concentrated alcohol.

“Layla was actually pretty nice to you,” she admits, twirling the glass on its base. “There’s not even a full ounce of liquor in that. Course, now you probably want another one, right?”

The bartender pouts. "Aw. Well, to each their own." She eyes the biker woman knowingly. "As for you, how many more?"

The biker leans forward, her loose clothing shifting across her body. "Five to start. And one Layla."

"Like hell." Layla ruffles her short hair playfully. "Quit acting like you're drunk already." Turning her back, she sets to work on several orders. "Try again in half an hour."

"Will do." The biker laughs and returns her focus to you. "Don't mind us, we go way back."

"I see." Remembering that you need to pay for the drink, you reach for your purse.

She stops your hand gently. "No need. I covered for you."

You tense up at the sensation of her skin on yours. "You didn't have to do that," you reply, embarrassed at your forgetfulness. "But thanks."

She orders another round for the both of you, and you take the shot more easily than before, welcoming the return of that sweetness. Each drink relaxes you more and more, until for some reason, everything seems really funny and amazing. Ten shots, and you feel ready to take on the world.

Your companion holds her liquor a bit better, but she’s still clearly tipsy. “That enough for you?” she asks, her voice slightly slurred.

“I think so,” you giggle. The sensation of condensed alcohol is buzzing within you. It feels warm. Or maybe that’s just her arm around your waist, pulling your barstools a bit closer together. Her leather jacket rubs against the thin fabric of your dress.

“Y’know,” she murmurs into your ear, “I’m real glad you came today. I was havin’ a pretty hard time with work an’ all, but you cheered me up.”

Everything is happening in slow motion. You lean back into her arm, letting your head rest on her shoulder. The jacket is cool against your burning face. “Wasn’ it just the booze?”

“Course not. Anything’s better with a beautiful girl.”

She runs her other hand through your long hair, lulling you into a trance. Falling asleep here would be really nice. You grip the loose leather between your fingers and hug her arm snuggly. You’ve always wanted to hold onto a woman like this.

The magic number: 21. You’re finally the right age. After floundering through high school and a bit of college with your unaccepting family and clueless friends, after hearing for the millionth time, “but you don’t look like a lesbian”, you’ve made your way here on a Friday night. And damn it, you’re gonna have fun.

A small neon sign decorates the entrance, the name of the bar flashing in bright crimson and yellow. The hem of your red dress, which reaches around your mid-thigh, flaps in the warm wind as you walk briskly. You hope you aren’t dressed too formally. You just wanted to look pretty. Before now, there’s never been a point in looking pretty for anyone you might like. It’s not like girls tape signs on themselves, “Hey, I’m gay too!”.

You chuckle at the thought and summon up your courage. You’ve nearly reached the front of the line to get in. Two bouncers stand by the door, one male and one, surprisingly, female. She’s got close-cropped blonde hair and striking blue eyes. Beneath her loose-fitting army jacket is a white tank top that clings to her modest figure. A pair of cargo pants and old boots completes her strong, reliable look.

When you step to the front of the line, she smiles kindly. “ID?”

You hand it to her along with some cash, your hand trembling. She takes it for a moment, her fingers brushing yours. A bit rough, but gentle. You blush.

“Here you go,” she says smoothly, handing it back. “Enjoy.”

“I will,” you say earnestly. “It’s my first time.”

She raises an eyebrow. You blink and wave your hands. “Not like that! Well, that too actually… I mean…!”

She chuckles and pats your head. “Woah there. Whatever it is, you just need to enjoy it, right?” Her sapphire eyes are warm and welcoming. “You don’t have to be afraid here.”

You nod stiffly, face flushed. God, you say the stupidest things when you’re nervous. Still, it’s almost worth it to have her hand on you.

“Now get in there and have fun!” she laughs, rubbing your back a little forcefully to nudge you inside the bar. “There’s the bar, tables, some games, couches.” She winks. “And a basement.”

Swallowing, you start making your way across the bar, hoping the bathroom isn't in the exact opposite direction you're going. The place isn't too big, but there are a lot of people. It's Friday night, after all.

Jay lays her head on your shoulder, her face flushed against your bare skin. "Bathroom's further this way, by the games."

You nod and head to where you see the edges of some pool tables, too embarrassed to even thank her. The woman too drunk to even walk right had to tell you where the bathroom was.

A few heads turn your way and a few voices call out in concern, but you ignore them and push open the bathroom door. Leading her to a stall, you open its door and let her kneel down in front of the toilet.

The seconds tick away as you lean against one of the stall dividers and hope she'll be all right. Sure, you ended up drinking at parties in high school, but you never stayed long enough to witness things like this.

After a minute, she still hasn't gotten sick. You peek into the stall cautiously and see her getting to her feet. She wobbles and falls into the side of the stall.

Without thinking, you rush in to help her stand. "Easy," you say, placing your hands on her back and stomach and trying to keep her upright. "I thought you were going to be sick."

She shakes her head slowly. "Layla likes t'over exaggerate." Her arms slide easily around your waist, and she draws you into her warm body. "I'm used to drinkin' a lot."

Now you don't feel quite so bad about her guiding you to the bathroom. "You could've told me that. I was really worried. Well, I still am, since you can't even stand up-"

Her lips are on yours. You freeze up for a moment, shocked by the lack of warning.

She looks a bit surprised, then happy. "Glad we feel the same way. What's your name?"

You tell her your name. "I like that," she answers, leaning on her elbows. "Nice sound to it."

"Yours is nice too," you tell her, wondering how close you can get to her. She doesn't seem like the type to set many physical boundaries. "It's cool. A bit masculine, but not too much."

She's pleased with that. "That's exactly what I was going for. Glad it worked."

The two of you continue chatting, each trying to scratch the surface of the other's life. You tell her about your family, your trials and tribulations in high school, and your battle through college. Jay orders more shots over the course of the conversation, and the more she drinks, the more she opens up to you.

She tells tales of her own younger life, and the backlash she faced from those she thought were her friends. How her current job is rough on her, and now she's turned to this bar on Fridays to ease a bit of her stress and loneliness. The kind of voice that makes you wish she would put her arms around you.

By the end of it, you've lost track of the stories and she's lost track of the shots. Glancing down at the table, you see what are surely far too many empty glasses.

"Jay," you whisper, tugging her jacket. "I think you've had enough."

"Yeah..." she sighs, a self-defeating laugh escaping her throat. "Prolly have."

She tries to stand and sways back and forth on shaky legs. "Careful!" you say, hastily sliding off your stool and grabbing her arm for support. "I'm so sorry, I should've stopped you before this happened." She's leaning on you pretty hard, and you're thankful she's not very heavy.

"Nah... 'S always happens... I mighta drank too much 'n school'r somethin'. Who knows?"

"Is everything all right over there?"

Layla's shouting from behind the counter. You shake your head. "She drank too much."

The bartender winces. "Better get her to the bathroom, then. Know where it is?"

You hadn't thought to look when you came in. You don't want to embarrass yourself again, but Jay's getting worse.

The bartender snaps back. "And she's patient, unlike you!"

Layla deals with a few more customers and rushes back over. "Okay, what kind do you want?"

You have no clue. The only beers you've ever had are Budweiser and the generic brand, but something tells you that's not what these two are talking about.

"Tell you what." The bartender bends over and pulls a green bottle from a bucket of ice. "I'm kind of busy right now, so let's just go with Heineken." She twists the cap off and places the cold, dripping bottle in front of you.

The biker drops some change into the woman's open palm. "As for me, I'll take five more of the usual to start."

"Do you have to pay in change all the time?" Layla sighs, dropping the coins into what sounds like a metal box, where they land in a series of clinks and clanks. "There's machines where you can cash it in."

"Those things charge, right?" The biker folds her arms. "I'm not gonna pay for my money if I'm not even borrowin' it. That's bullshit. I'm havin' enough trouble as is."

Layla holds up her hands in defeat and walks down to the other side of the counter. "I get it, I get it."

The biker turns to you, apologetic. "Sorry 'bout my language."

"It's fine, really." After what she just said, you feel more concerned for her than anything else. But that would probably be rude to bring up now, so you decide to let it go. "But she left before I could pay for the beer."

"Nah, Layla'd never leave without her money." She laughs at the thought. "I covered for you."

"Oh." You've had guys buy you a drink before, and you always wished they wouldn't have. Now that she's the one, your heart beats a little faster. "You didn't have to do that."

"Course not. I wanted to." Her smile is daring, yet kind. "I'd like it if we could talk some more. Get to know each other. What do you say?"

She orders another round for the both of you, and you take the shot more easily than before, welcoming the return of that sweetness. Each drink relaxes you more and more, until for some reason, everything seems really funny and amazing. Ten shots, and you feel ready to take on the world.

Your companion holds her liquor a bit better, but she’s still clearly tipsy. “That enough for you?” she asks, her voice slightly slurred.

“I think so,” you giggle. The sensation of condensed alcohol is buzzing within you. It feels warm. Or maybe that’s just her arm around your waist, pulling your barstools a bit closer together. Her leather jacket rubs against the thin fabric of your dress.

“Y’know,” she murmurs into your ear, “I’m real glad you came today. I was havin’ a pretty hard time with work an’ all, but you cheered me up.”

Everything is happening in slow motion. You lean back into her arm, letting your head rest on her shoulder. The jacket is cool against your burning face. “Wasn’ it just the booze?”

“Course not. Anything’s always better with a beautiful girl.”

She runs her other hand through your long hair, lulling you into a trance. Falling asleep here would be really nice. You grip the loose leather between your fingers and hug her arm snuggly. You’ve always wanted to hold onto a woman like this.

Squinting, you try to make out the small chalk letters above you in the hope that you’ll see something remotely understandable. Unfortunately, it’s just a bunch of liquors and brands that you’ve never tasted or sometimes even heard of.

Your confusion and embarrassment mount as the bartender stands there looking at you, waiting for you to make a decision. “Well…”

“How ‘bout the daily special, Layla?”

The mellifluous voice comes from behind. Craning your neck, you see a woman behind you in a biker jacket and loose jeans. She reminds you a bit of the bouncer you met earlier, but far more rugged. This woman came from the streets, not from the military.

The bartender, apparently Layla, gives an annoyed smirk for reasons you aren’t sure of. “And one for you too, I take it?”

Your savior grins back at her. “What else?”

Layla sighs and turns to her shelf of liquor, lined with colorful bottles that catch the low light and make patterns on surrounding surfaces.

The woman takes the stool next to you. “Never been to a real bar before?”

“Yeah,” you answer sheepishly. “Thanks for bailing me out.”

“Nah, don’t worry about it.” She has an easygoing smile, not overly joyful but certainly not cold. Her skin is tan from work, her face a bit funny. The fringes of her slightly overgrown pixie cut brush the tops of her ears. “How’s it feel, first time out of the gate?”

You decide to be honest. “Kind of scary,” you admit. “I’ve never been around this many people who I knew were like me. It’s like I suddenly have options now.”

She laughs, a low, soothing chuckle that makes your chest squeeze up. “I know what you mean. When I was your age, I thought I was never gonna find a girl.” Her eyes meet yours, almost burnt orange in this lighting. “Can’t see you havin’ those problems, though. Any girl who’s rougher around the edges’d fall for you like that.”

“That’s nice of you to say,” you mumble, blushing a bit at the sincere compliment. “But if they did, they probably thought I was straight.”

“That’s why it’s so great here, right?” She leans in closer, so that the smallest bit of her leather jacket touches your arm. “We take away those kinds’a barriers.”

The slight touch sends an enjoyable shiver down your spine, and you want to lean against her. “Right.”

Your drinks arrive on the counter with a clink. “All right Jay, show me the money.”

The woman hands Layla ten dollars, which she folds and stashes under the counter before going to attend to some other customers. The two of you are relatively alone now, with no one else paying attention to you.

“Jay?” you ask. “That’s your name?”

“It’s actually Janet,” she answers, pressing her shoulder to yours with a smile. “But yeah, I go by Jay.”

She sits back, to your disappointment, and grabs her shot from the counter. “You ready?”

You said earlier that you wanted to get drunk, but now that you think about it, maybe it's not the best choice. Having fun wasn't the only reason you came here- you were also hoping to find someone you like. And if you're going to try to find a girlfriend, you want to show her your best side right off the bat. You have a feeling that your drunk side is not your best side.

"I feel kind of relaxed already," you tell her. "That's all I was really looking for."

Shrugging, she pulls a few bills out of her deep jeans pocket. "Suit yourself." Placing them on the counter, she waits for the bartender Layla to notice and scoop them up. "Hey Layla, she says she doesn't wanna drink anymore."

The bartender pouts. "Aw. Well, to each their own." She eyes the biker woman knowingly. "As for you, how many more?"

The biker leans forward, her loose clothing shifting across her body. "Five to start. And one Layla."

"Like hell." Layla ruffles her short hair playfully. "Quit acting like you're drunk already." Turning her back, she sets to work on several orders. "Try again in half an hour."

"Will do." The biker laughs and returns her focus to you. "Don't mind us, we go way back."

"I see." Remembering that you need to pay for the drink, you reach for your purse.

She stops your hand gently. "No need. I covered for you."

You tense up at the sensation of her skin on yours. "You didn't have to do that," you reply, embarrassed at your forgetfulness. "But thanks."

"I woulda done it whether you forgot or not, y'know." Her hand leaves yours and finds its way into one of the many pockets in her leather jacket. "Even if you're not gonna drink anymore, how 'bout we chat a bit? Get to know each other?"

“Now here’s a girl after my own heart.” She puts her hand to her chin. “Let’s see… All right, let’s try that.”

Without giving any indication of what exactly you’ll be trying, she turns and gets going with a few bottles and a shaker. You tap your fingers on the counter, eagerly awaiting whatever exotic concoction she’s decided to make.

“Don’t think I’ve seen you here before.”

Craning your neck, you see a woman in a biker jacket standing behind you. Her loose t-shirt and jeans hide it, but you can tell just from the curves of her shoulders that she’s got a powerful build.

“You haven’t,” you reply, turning in your seat and leaning your elbow on the counter so you can face her. “This is my first time here. Or in any bar.”

“You’re doin’ pretty well for a first time,” She takes the seat next to yours. “You even knew how to order.”

“Uh, well…” you glance back at Layla, who works quickly and efficiently. “Actually, I let the bartender decide for me.”

The woman’s fiery brown eyes widen. “You let Layla pick your drink?”

Wow, those eyes are intense. Just looking into them makes your stomach do backflips. “What’s wrong with that?”

She folds her arms, the leather of her jacket rubbing together. “Nah, nothin’ wrong with it. Just, uh…”

Bending over in her seat, she whispers. “She’s kind of a horndog. Especially when it comes to younger women.”

Her warm breath prickles your ear, and your face gets hot. “Oh. Well, thanks for warning me.”

Layla returns right then with your drink, setting it down neatly in front of you. “Enjoy. It’s sweet, don’t worry. Kind of like lemonade.”

Your new companion smirks. “Lemonade with vodka. You tryin’a get her smashed?”

“She said she wanted to get drunk,” Layla counters, hands on her hips. “The customer is always right. And as for you, Jay…” She places another shot on the counter. “Don’t you get too handsy yourself.”

The bartender leaves to attend to other customers. Your companion laughs. “That woman, I swear. She’s got eyes and ears in the back of her head. Heard everything we said. Or guessed.”

You stare down at your shot; pale yellow liquid in a frosted shot glass, garnished with a small slice of lemon. It really does look just like lemonade.

Beside you, the woman scoops up her own glass, layered with yellow on the bottom and brown on top. You aren’t sure what it could be, but the layered effect is appealing. These shots are like little works of art.

She grins. “You ready? Just knock it back.”

Nodding, you pick up your own glass. She counts it down by bobbing her head, and you go for it. The sweetness and tartness of the drink spreads across your tongue, the vodka leaving a bit of fire in its wake.

“Ah…” the biker woman lowers her shot glass and grins. “I’ll never get enough’a those.” She points to your empty glass. “How was it?”

“Good,” you answer, mouth and brain still reeling from the concentrated alcohol.

“Layla was actually pretty nice to you,” she admits, twirling the glass on its base. “There’s not even a full ounce of liquor in that. Course, now you probably want another one, right?”

“Surprising.” She gives you a curious look and reaches down to pull a bottle from what sounds like a bucket of ice beneath the counter. She holds up a dark brown bottle with Guiness emblazoned across its front. You’ve heard of that one before. “Why not give this one a go? It’s got a nice kick.”

Grasping the top firmly in her palm, she gives the cap a firm twist and hands the bottle to you. “Thanks,” you say, the glass chilling your fingers. You take a sip. Definitely strong, and a bit bitter, but not bad at all.

“Good?”

You nod. She grins. “Glad to hear it. I didn’t think you’d go for stout. Guess I shouldn’t judge by appearances, huh?”

“People always make assumptions about me,” you reply, taking another swig and letting the sensation of it melt into your mouth. “Usually they assume I’m straight. I get that, but what really pisses me off is when I come out to them and they don’t believe me.”

The bartender rolls her eyes. “Believe me, I’ve gotten that too. Who do they think goes after all of their stereotypical butch lesbians? Not to say some of them aren’t into each other.” She rests her elbows on the counter. “Or that two more feminine ladies can’t hit it off.”

Her face is closer now, and you start feeling a bit hot.

“So,” she continues, “this your first time at a gay bar?”

You take another drink to calm your nerves. “Yeah. I turned 21 a few days ago.”

“You serious?” Her green eyes widen a bit, clearly interested. “I thought you’d just never had a good beer. Now you’re gonna tell me you’ve never kissed a girl either.”

Your cheeks burn a little. “How do you even find other girls?”

Her gaze turns sympathetic. “It can be pretty hard when you’re younger. Sometimes it just happens though, like with a friend.”

The idea of a friend actually falling back in love with you is entirely alien. You plunk your bottle down on the counter, half empty. “Maybe I’m unlucky.”

“Maybe.” She picks up the bottle and takes a small sip. “Or maybe you were just saving up your luck to find this place.” Setting it back down beside your hand, she takes the opportunity to lightly brush your knuckles with her fingertips. “I thought so,” she says, bending down and pulling something out of what sounds like a bucket of ice. She holds up the cold, frosted bottle labeled “Newcastle”. “You might like this one, then. Bit of a sweet aftertaste.”

Grasping the top firmly in her palm, she gives the cap a firm twist and hands the bottle to you. “Thanks,” you say, the glass chilling your fingers. You take a sip. It’s a dark beer with a pleasant flavor. She’s right about the aftertaste.

“Good?”

You nod. She grins. “Glad to hear it. So, this your first time at a gay bar?”

Another swig. Your mouth feels warm. “Yeah. I turned 21 a few days ago.”

“You serious?” Her green eyes widen a bit, clearly interested. “I thought you’d just never had a good beer. Now you’re gonna tell me you’ve never kissed a girl either.”

Your feel instantly nervous when you spot the staircase. A sign pinned to the wall beside it reads “The Basement”, surrounded by a few hearts. Swallowing, you begin your descent.

The pounding in your ribs sends new energy through you. The area around you gets darker with every step, as though you are descending into the night itself.

Upon reaching the bottom, you hear some quiet moaning that sets your heart on fire. The basement is very dimly lit with warm, sensual colors. There are couches here too, only these ones are filled by women with far less clothing. It dawns on you that you’ve never seen another woman naked aside from family members. Some games wouldn’t hurt. Contrary to other’s assumptions, you can hold your own at darts or pool. If anything, your family taught you how to party.

When you get to the games corner, all the pool tables are full. One game in particular has a bit of an audience, and you find yourself drawn in as well. It becomes obvious why- one player is trying to sink the eight ball, and the other isn’t far behind.

You watch as the player calls her pocket and lines up her shot. It’s a tough shot, and you wonder how she’s going to pull it off. She bends over and eyes the set-up thoughtfully, moving the cue back and forth between her middle and index fingers. They’re long and slender.

She makes her shot with finesse. The cue ball cracks the side of the eight ball, sending it off at the perfect angle. It rolls right into the pocket.

Breathing out, she arches her back and straightens the collar of her red plaid shirt. Then she shifts her side swept bangs back to one side, tucking some excess behind her ear.

“Damn,” her opponent sighs, applauding her. “Good game. Should’ve known you’d get me in the end.”

The winner shrugs, offering up a handshake. “Lucky shot. Good game.”

After shaking hands, the loser presses a few bills into her palm and leaves. The small audience starts to dissolve too, going back to whatever they were doing.

The winner remains by the pool table, her confident silhouette illuminated by the differently colored bar lights.

As you get nearer, you see lots of young women. Some are sitting and flirting while others lay against each other, lips locked without a care in the world. You wish you could be like that sometimes.

You realize that you look really out of place here without someone else by your side. Maybe you should try to find someone first, and then see about the couches.

The magic number: 21. You’re finally the right age. After floundering through high school and a bit of college with your unaccepting family and clueless friends, after hearing for the millionth time, “but you don’t look like a lesbian”, you’ve made your way here on a Friday night. And damn it, you’re gonna have fun.

A small neon sign decorates the entrance, the name of the bar flashing in bright crimson and yellow. The hem of your red dress, which reaches around your mid-thigh, flaps in the warm wind as you walk briskly. You hope you aren’t dressed too formally. You just wanted to look pretty. Before now, there’s never been a point in looking pretty for anyone you might like. It’s not like girls tape signs on themselves, “Hey, I’m gay too!”.

You chuckle at the thought and summon up your courage. You’ve nearly reached the front of the line to get in. Two bouncers stand by the door, one male and one, surprisingly, female. She’s got close-cropped hair blonde hair and striking blue eyes. Beneath her loose-fitting army jacket is a white tank top that clings to her modest figure. A pair of cargo pants and old boots completes her strong, reliable look.
