You run to get a canteen of water from the fridge and rush down to your concrete lined basement. You get to a corner away from your farm tools and crouch down with your hands over your head.

http://www.doe.in.gov/safety/images/position.gif

About two minutes later the house starts shaking like a washing machine. Bangs and crashes echo into the basement. You wonder if you really did the right thing. Was it wise to stay in the path of a tornado? Sighing, you prepare for your life to end. But then the shaking stops. You wait for about fifteen minutes and then slowly creep upstairs. Your house is a mess.
The refrigerator is in the living room and your couch is in the kitchen. Your bedroom now has three walls instead of four. There are numerous holes in the roof. But you are alive. And later, when you help your Mom and Dad clean up their shop in town, you will thank yourself for remembering the correct procedure for dealing with a twister.
A black finger reaches down from the pea-soup clouds and touches a field about a mile away.
You jam your keys into the ignition and step on the gas. The engine whines and dies. You stare at the growing finger in the rear-view. As you curse and bang the steering wheel with your fist, the engine suddenly comes to life. You speed out of the driveway and down the road towards North Platte. You want nothing more than to be with your family right now. The wind rocks your car back and forth. Dust swirls around until you aren’t even sure of you are still on the road.
You and your car are about thirty feet in the air. As the car begins to plummet you question whether it was a good idea to drive off. Then your head smashes into the ground and window of your truck and everything goes black.

You wipe the sweat on your brow with the back of your hand as you run to the kitchen counter. You snatch the keys to your blue 1983 Ford Ranger. As you head out the door, you see the wind chimes fly by in front of your face in a gust of wind. Shaking, you manage to unlock the car door. You jump inside and buckle up because it’s going to be a bumpy ride. You peer through the rear-view. All of a sudden you get a horrible feeling in your stomach. It feels exactly like the time you rode on the roller coaster at the county fair years ago. The dust clears. You and your car are about thirty feet in the air. As the car begins to plummet you question whether it was a good idea to drive off. Then your head smashes into the ground and window of your truck and everything goes black.

The black screen switches to the news room of KNOP-TV. A bored weatherman announces a Tornado Warning for Central Nebraska and the area immediately surrounding North Platte. He casually remarks that while this part of Nebraska doesn’t lie in traditional Tornado Alley, a Tornado Warning should be taken very seriously. He pushes his glasses up and begins to describe ways to stay safe in a tornado emergency when the screen turns to white noise. A thud can be heard on your front yard a second later. Dropping your ice tea on the floor, you run to the window to see your TV antennae lying smashed on the ground.
You remember that the best thing to do in a Tornado Warning is to get to a safe spot. You run to get a canteen of water from the fridge and rush down to your concrete lined basement. You get to a corner away from your farm tools and crouch down with your hands over your head. About two minutes later the house starts shaking like a washing machine. Bangs and crashes echo into the basement. You wonder if you really did the right thing. Was it wise to stay in the path of a tornado. Sighing, you prepare for your life to end. The shaking stops.

You don’t worry about those clouds in the distance because it’s just another thunderstorm. You don’t even think about tornados because tornados are more of an Oklahoman thing anyway. Covering yourself in your Dale Earnhardt blanket, you quickly doze off on the sofa with the comforting sound of the wind rushing through the porch. You begin to dream that you’re standing on train tracks. A train rushes towards you. You try to run away, but your legs feel like jelly and don’t budge. The roar from the train pounds in your head, and the smoke is so thick it makes you nauseous. You close your eyes just as the train hits you- BANG! You wake up to a two by four lodged into your abdomen. You hear the walls of your living room being ripped apart but all you see is a black nothingness. You try to scream but your mouth fills with blood. It tastes like those pennies you used to suck on as a child. You feebly try to pull out the plank of wood from your gut but your arms get weaker by the second. As the world grows silent and your vision fades away, your last conscious thought is that maybe you should have turned on that TV so you could get to safety. But it’s too late for that now.
