Carefully approach the snakelike creature

You draw your blades and proceed with care towards the snakelike creature. It rises from its coiled state and as it does so, seems to transform into a more human-like shape.
"Put away your weapons and let me tell your fortune," it says.
The creatures voice is soft and soothing. You do not put your blades back in their sheathes, but you allow yourself to appear to relax slightly as you continue approaching it.
"Please show me your palm, so I can read it," the figure intones.
"Which hand?" you ask. You're just about within striking range.
"Left," it replies... just as it lunges forward as quickly as, well, a striking snake.
You were anticipating this, however, and bring both your blades up with the speed of a north wind. They cross and sever the creature's head just as it was about to bite you.
You proceed into the next chamber. At the far end are two figures that appear to be women made entirely of ash.
