You figure the Los Angeles River is your best bet. Heading east, you reach the river without any trouble.
The concrete lined river runs north to south, cutting straight through the middle of the LA. To the north you can reach the mostly suburban San Fernando Valley, and maybe beyond, into the mostly wilderness of interior California. If you head south you'll eventually come to the Port of Los Angeles, one of the busiest ports in the world. Maybe you could stow away on a container ship and head somewhere in Asia, where you'll be less likely to be detected. Then again you could always head back into the city.
