On the planet of Ryvon, bio-magical technology is used to create genetically engineered human/animal crossbreeds. These creatures are used as bodyguards, watchdogs, manual laborers, and of course, as pets. Such pets are status symbols among the people of Ryvon and it is tradition for a young man or woman to receive their first pet for their eighteenth birthday, although wealthier families may give a pet to a child as young as thirteen.
