'So are we working on a tableau piece or are you actually going to do something?' you ask.

The girl frowns. 'I've already called the cops,' she says. 'We're just going to wait around while they get here.'

'I didn't kill him.'

'Yeah, you said already.' She pauses for a moment but then her curiosity gets the better of her. 'Go on then. Let's hear your end of the deal.'

'I'm a private investigator,' you say. 'I was following the stiff when he pulled in to here. I heard a gunshot so I came in to investigate when someone sapped me from behind.'

'You really expect me to believe that?' she asks.

'That's what happened,' you say.

She thinks this over. 'You got some ID Mr. private investigator?'

'Yeah.' You reach inside your coat for your license but she jerks her gun arm and you put them up again. 'Just how many guns do you think I carry around with me?'

She frowns again. She's been doing that plenty since you met. 'Don't try anything funny,' she says. You promise her you won't. She steps closer to you and puts a hand inside your jacket feeling for the pocket. The other hand pokes you in the stomach with the gun.
