With the girl gone you turn back to the scene. There's something about this that doesn't make any sense. So Riordan drives to his secretary's house after a long day. He has a key and he lets himself in. He comes to this room and just a few moments later he's shot dead. So he must have walked into something he wasn't meant to walk into. But what? And where is his secretary?

You notice he's holding something in one hand. You lean down and force open the fingers. It's a cigarette, but long and brown and without any filter. You smell it. Whatever it is, it's not just tobacco. You put it back the way you found it. Now what would a guy like Riordan be doing with a thing like that? You shake your head. Yours not to reason why. Your just the poor sap who took this job.

On your way out you stop at the telephone and make a call. Nobody picks up. You try again at another number. This time it's answered by a man with a British accent that can't have originated further east than Jersey. 'I want to speak to Mrs. Riordan,' you say.

'I'm sorry sir, but Mrs. Riordan is out at the moment. May I ask who's calling?'

'Errol Flynn,' you reply and disconnect. You light a cigarette and smoke most of it before the sirens arrive.
