You should be comfortable making edits of your Blogger template. An understanding of Blogger's [http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=84&query=post%20template&topic=0&type=f post template] feature would be helpful, since this hack requires the insertion of a line of code into each post that you wish to categorise.

==Description==

Adds categories to your Blogger blog. You insert a category label on each post that you publish (this can be visible to your readers or invisible). David's server keeps a record of these, and feeds the data back into an ajax sidebar menu that displays a list of categories, and a list of post titles within a category once a category is selected.

==Method==

There are three template edits required. Add a specified line of code to each post, perhaps by adding it to the Blogger post template. Add a special DIV tag to your blog sidebar to locate the category menu, and finally add the specified code to call the script just before the closing body tag.

I am interested in user-authored modifications to [http://www.blogger.com/ Blogger], and have been collecting them in a post called [http://blogfresh.blogspot.com/2005/08/blogger-hacks-series.html?&tags=Highlights Blogger Hacks] for about a year. This post became difficult to navigate, and it became difficult to illustrate subtle differences between similar hacks, so the Blogger Hacks Wiki was born.

The purpose of this Wiki is to organise and catalog user-authored modifications to Google's Blogger blogging system. The wiki enables Blogger users to browse pages & select a hack or modification that is useful to them.

The wiki has been authored in English because the majority of the available hacks have been authored in English. Please contribute to this wiki in English. We are happy to discuss translations / alternate language mirrors if that's something that you'd like to see.

Please create an account and log into the Bloggerhacks Wiki. This helps the community to track and value your contributions.

==Submission==

Our goal is to create a standard record for each hack, so that users can compare them easily. To add a hack to the wiki, please copy & paste the headings from the create page into your new page.

Please give your new page a brief, specific and relevant title. Your page will be alphabetically listed in the hacks category. You will note some conventions re: titles have emerged. Category hacks, for instance, have for the most part been titled "Categories using..." Please observe these conventions to see your hack listed alongside other relevant content.

Please write your submission with a focus on Google's Blogger platform. This wiki is designed for users of that service, & so the details of your page should be relevant to those users, although you should feel free to refer to implementations on other platforms where appropriate.

Please create one wiki page per hack, or per outcome, and write as clearly as possible when explaining multiple strategies on a single page.

Please include information under as many of the headings provided as possible. In the skill-level section, please describe the specific skills necessary to implement the hack, rather than providing a generic "easy" or "intermediate"

When including external links on pages, please link to pages that describe or demonstrate the modification that you're cataloging, rather than to the top level of a site. Where multiple pages exist, please link to the most comprehensive or authoritative information available.

Please describe the modification that you're cataloging as fully as possible. The goal of the wiki is to enable comparison and contrast between similar hacks, and so the more information that you can provide, the better.

==Submission: Categories==

Internal categories are the principal navigation system of this wiki. Please categorise your page carefully and comprehensively as follows:

1. All pages describing hacks should be added to the hacks category. To do this, write category: hacks at the bottom of your page and enclose it in a double set of square brackets

2. All pages should also be added to at least one relevant sub-category. To do this, review the list of available sub-categories in the top panel of the view hacks page and select at least one. Write category: whatever at the bottom of your page and enclose it in a double set of square brackets. Repeat to add your hack to multiple relevant sub-categories. Please do not categorise your content in areas that are not relevant.

3. If you do not see a relevant sub-category listed, feel free to create one. Write category: whatever at the bottom of your page and enclose it in a double set of square brackets. When you publish your page you'll notice that the new sub-category appears in red at the bottom of the page. To correct this, click the red link. You'll be taken to a "create" page for the new sub-category. Simply write category: hacks on this new page and enclose it in a double set of square brackets, then save the page. You will have categorised your new sub-category in "hacks" and it will appear on the main view hacks page.

One of the reasons for moving these hacks into a Wiki format is to make them accessible and open to all. I'm a big believer in the web as a forum for developing communities, and want to provide a central repository for blog modifications. Whether you're interested in a single hack to fix that little bug on your blog, or whether you'll be here 24-7 as a contributor and administrator, you're welcome. So, what can you do?

Have a great blog hack? Want to see it listed on the Wiki? Go to the [[bloggerhacks:Create_Page|create a page]] page. There are instructions / recommendations for the page layout over there. Remember, our goal is to point out the subtle differences between various hacks that achieve the same outcome in different ways, so the more information you include, and the more carefully you categorise your new page, the better. Although it is a great option for free blog hosting, there are some significant structural issues with Blogger, most obviously that users are not able to categorise posts, and that there is no native / inbuilt trackback. Many users have developed workarounds for these, & we're bringing them to you in Wiki format for maximum interactivity and comparability.

==How is the Wiki organised?==

This BloggerHacks Wiki contains an ever-growing collection of hacks and modifications for Google's [http://www.blogger.com Blogger] blogging service. The goal is to develop an open, current and comprehensive set of hacks, and to make them available to all blogger users.

The BloggerHacks Wiki was developed because the list of hacks on [http://blogfresh.blogspot.com/2005/08/blogger-hacks-series.html Freshblog] became too difficult to navigate, and because the post, although a comprehensive list, doesn't provide in-depth information about the hacks or make it easy to compare options.

==Contribute==
You are invited to contribute your hacks for Google's [http://www.blogger.com Blogger]. To do that, simply [[bloggerhacks:Create_Page|create a page]] to describe the hack, add-on or modification that you've made to the service, then categorise your page in both the "hacks" category and an appropriately specific sub-category (like "backlinks" or "comment feeds") that files your page in the right spot.

This is a combination of three interrelated webpage modifications, Browservulsel's [http://browservulsel.blogspot.com/2005/09/custom-blogger-comments-form-4-spam.html custom comments], Alex King's [http://www.alexking.org/index.php?content=software/javascript/content.php Quicktags] and Scripty Goddess's [http://www.scriptygoddess.com/archives/2002/08/05/preview-comments-live/ live preview]. The end result is an inline comment submission form that allows for the addition of basic HTML formatting with one click, as well as including images of commenters, and a "live preview" of the comment.

Use this hack to hide all post content behind a link. When the link is clicked, the entire text of the post will become visible. Once added to your blog, this functionality will apply to every post. When clicked a second time, the post text will become hidden once more.

The drawback of this method is that all posts, regardless of their length, will be hidden behind the "show/hide" link (or whatever text you use for the link).
